Addiction and chronic pain

Was jusrt talking with refusingbondage and was thinking...It is not fair to be a chronic pain patient and an addict!  It is a real bumber but I guess life is not fair all of the time  is it?  People on the pain forum say people with "real" pain do not get addicted..I am here to say..."NOT" as it happened to me altho i know it doesnt happen to all...lucky i guess ):

I was wondering what everyone else here has done for their pain instead of using narcotics?

For me yoga helps me alot..I have DDD and fusions/scoliosis..also injections, steroids here and there, ice and heat, massage and anti-inflamatories, chiropratic, acupressure with a machine not needles..a half hour in a.jacuzzi helps ..I have so many machines and contraptions and special pillows it is a joke...but i guess we gotta try!

There is a difference between being "dependent" on something and being an "addict"

Unfortunately those with chronic pain will be dependent upon drugs unless they want to live in pain..and yes your body will become use to taking those drugs if you take them daily..but thats not the same as being an addict or have an addictive personality. If you are taking them only to help with your pain..Not to feel better about your life or take several so you can get a buzz..I say its perfectly alright.

right, worried, i've checked with her the cream brand and it is exactly the one you named.

in my words from what i found then, it makes the zone wherever you have pain, less sensitive to pain ( a good thing i'd think :)

and quite natural when thinking in chili, cayenne,...right ? lol

about this capsicae  cream or whatever the sp :)

my mother was given this cream after her three surgical procedures  ( carpal tunnel syndrome ) .

she was in a lot of pain ( taking pain killers and nothing worked very well , anyway that's anoother thing.. :) ) and even if the cream is supposed for muscle ans articulations pain best , hers was on the fingers and the whole hands (  pain  from the" nerves ends", i mean ) and the doctor told her to try these type of creams made of capsicum . i was told it was a very natural way of producing  endorphines where the pain is, it gives an instant heat ( at first mostly ) and after some minutes it worked for her..  hope the same with yours :)

oh, yes, be very, very careful with washing your hands after use and do not dare touching your eyes, ay, mamma, i did it and......my god !

But we are all in it together regardless of what we choose to take. Chronic pain can be devestating no matter what. Just like everyone who has battled addiction or has loved someone who has, no matter what choices we make we can all understand better than others who haven't been there why we might make them.

He is an x-addict  LOL  my pain doc is....so beleive me he dont like narcotics!  good for me in a way i guess...he gives me injections..due friday...ambien for sleep..2.5 mg as needed..muscle relaxers i rarely take..gave me lyrica/yuck!  i work and can not be a zombie..i am talking with him this friday about another epidural..anyway...i manage..i go to a homeopathic doctor who treats me with sonar waves...i also use acupressure/not puncture on my trigger points and inversion therapy...yoga 4-5 x a week and cardio like 3 x a week...yoga has taken my time from cardio as my time is limited..i wear a cervical brace at nightif i hurt/with ice stuffed in the back/ a cooly thing.///neck feels better in the am....rice bag i heat up in the m-wave that i put on my shoulders if i dont ice..love it!  i also have a shiatzu that i can lean on my pillow/turn on/and it goes up and down my back while i read...i am telling u i am a gadget gallery and i will try anything...i also lay over my yoga ball face up and let my neck hang..i also have an inversion bench that i hang from...if i think of anything else i will let u know

i told my pain doctor not to give me narcotics because i was afraid..so that is out!  and that is ok...my pain was not better on narcotics..i ended up using them like an AD...to keep me going...emotional pain and stress aggravates my real pain so addiction was not therapuedic for me..at all   I have never been so unhappy in my life..i am single and could not even have a relationship hiding my problem..isolating and counting pills..no one wants a depressed addict..lucky for me they turned on me...bad!  have used after procedure and they still made me feel like dog poop..no euphoria at all...and i would sweat right after using them that night at a prescribed dose..my body rejects them like poison

But i am a chronic pain patient who got addicted....people on the pain forum have different goals and that is their goals so i dont preach when i go there...they feel they can not function without them...like eagle said...no one can really say "MY pain is worse than ur pain"  so it is a moot discussion in my opinion and is to do with our goals for our life

I agree with amphitrite and worried completely. That is how I became addicted it was prescribed for chronic pain. I was told it wont happen if you truely need it. I needed it for pain then I needed it physically. I do agree some will not develope a addiction but your body and brain do become dependent on it. It does suck to still hurt!

Maybe "tendancy" wasn't the right word. Maybe instead..everyone has a "risk" despite 'real" pain or not.

But it is true that some don'r develop psychological addiction but only physical dependance. But that has more to do with someones internal psychological reactions, enviorment and genetics. Nothing to do with severity of pain or even pain at all.

Get post worried. Also I would have to say that those in the pain forum who say they cant get addicted if they are in real pain are in REAL DENIAL. Most of us have real pain everyday but have to choose which is worse to live with the pain or the addiction.

That's so untrue that if the pain is "real" or severe you can't become addicted to the pain medication. EVERYONE without exception has a tendancy to become addicted because addiction doesn't discriminate.

That other thing they say that if the pain is "real" you won't feel the effects of the medication is also very untrue. The amount of pain has no bearing on how your brain reacts biologically to narcotic substances. Infact when you first start taking them, pain or not your going to have the "feeling" of side effects which can last until your body become adjusted.

The major difference is the psychological reactions to someone in pain and someone using meds for reacreation purposes, the body will interperate the side effects differently and instead of looking for a high someone in pain is looking for pain relief so won't have the same phycological reaction to the feeling. But not always and thats when psychological addiction can occur. It is a smaller percentage, but the possibility is still theer and very real.

I don't know if some in the pain forum have just misinterperated the info they've read. But anyone can become addicted and true pain or not narcotics will for a time until your body becomes tolerant cause mild to moderate side effects including a possible feeling of well being.

Just thought I'd add what I personally know.

I love the yoga ball in the shower idea!..gotta try that but not sure my shower is big enuf...i can probably use the shower in the tub tho...that would be big enuf!   it is amazing the ideas we come up with when we have to...yoga ball and inversion therapy has helped me immensely...but pure yoga has helped me the most/but alot of that is stretching/elongating my spine as well....cardio can aggravate me if i jolt and i no longer do the treadmill or anything that requires me to lift my feet in motion...bike and elyptical do not require this....yoga has made my back stronger..i can see my muscles in my back and arms popping thru

Great post here worried......I found long ago that life doesnt have to be fair......vagaries of life I suppose they call it - - Consider a war...maybe even our guys in Iraq .... a seed gets misplaced and a plant grows where it would normally not grow - - that plant produces a branch that deflects a bullet headed for a good guy - - That guy is extremely lucky - - skill does not come into play - - serendidpity - blind luck is all it is ......

I have used hot water and yoga ball with good success ..... I do the stretches and yoga in the shower with hot spray on me ...... wish that it lasted longer -- also a little luck with lidoderm patches -- Will be investigating capsaican creams this week - hope they do a good job .........keep it up and dont keep it a secret when you find out what works best ...........

Good post worried.  It is so true about chronic pain and addiction.  Its very individual. ANYONE will become physically dependent on opiates if they take them for too long.  My mother had a botched total knee replacement 5 years ago.  She takes 3 Vicopforen (7.5) per day.  For 5 years.  She started at 2 per day but added the mid-day pill as her tolerance grew.  For 5 years she has not over taken, never ran out etc.  However she also worries about getting to the pharmacy on time and making sure the doc calls in the refill.  She does not consider herself an addict but knows she is physically dependent.

Ive said before the one and ONLY thing that helped my back when it almost crippled me was exercise.  I began walking.  When I started I could NOT stand straight and was hunched over (what a sight to see!) I was high as a kite on major painkillers but they didnt help.  What helped was the walking.  It stabilized my spine and strengthened my back.  Even now when it starts acting up - like on the weekends when I am lazy and sitting at home and not walking or jogging - and it begins to get out of place and I start hunching over (the down the leg shooting pain) I get to the track in a hurry and walk it out.  It has worked EVERY single time.  Drug free and it still works better than any drug. When my back first went out the doc said to me straight up that there was nothing that could be done.  It would eventually get worse.  Surgery one day but not anytime soon cause of my age.  I was down in the dumps and taking as many painkillers as they would feed me which was a LOT.  Exercise saved my health.
