Addiction and chronic pain

I was wondering how many people we have on here that used for chronic pain?  I did but for me they just didnt help my pain in the end anymore....I do take responsibility for using them at the end to function more than for pain...i have been having alot of pain as of late and do think stress plays a tremendous role in pain for me....I guess i will crack down on my yoga stretching and icing....may take a "pain break" from work and see if I can get out of this cycle.....what do others do for thier pain? If u work, how do u manage ur work and pain together?

Oh i am so sorry, Lady -  But you just left the door too widely open. Regard the marry a millionaire remark - - For you wouldnt that have to be : Remarry a millionaire??

Other than that I feel sorry for you - - but I have also experienced increased pain. Along with increased stress - - - Is it cause we are getting older every day or has the stress amped every thing up? And who cares what do I do about it ..........

mine is like u i think..troubleinohio...DDD with 2 discs "gone" and one fixing to bust...already had a fusion and i just do not want to do another...i am sure it would put me out of work as the recovery is long and it didnt help the pain last time

and i do know if i quit my job this would be better manda..and i wish i could/in a way/but then i would be bored i thin but part time would help...and i could afford to go part time in reality just cant find a job in my field that is part time...tried to get my boss to let me go to 4 days a week but he said no...i need a break and i know i am not gonna make it to age 67 working...i dont have any disability insurance at work and i know it takes forever to get on it thru the government...1500 bux is all i would get...that is tough to live on!  i am single so i guess i could marry a millionaire.....best thing i can do is keep on going right now but i have been thinking about either changing to a job with better benfits or taking a long break/and hope i dont lose my job in the process...my job is very flexible tho and accomodates all my doctor appointments and stuff..i can even come home and lay down if it is slow...i have alot of freedom but it is stressful and that is the worst aggravator of my pain

dont know what to do except wait for this cycle to pass...just they are coming more frequently and lasting longer these days/pain days i mean...pain pills do not help my pain...not lortab anyway so that is not really an answer even if i wanted to take them

yep chronic pain here. Im sure most of you already knwo my story as Ive mentioned it a "few " times LOL but in case you are new- i have a bad back- DDD, bulging discs, arthrititis of the entire spine (and elsewhere too but it doesnt hurt in those places YET lol) and they even said i had some scoliosis on an xray about a year or so ago. THey also told me I had fibromyalgia but I no longer believe i have that. I think that those body pains were actually WD's and I didnt even know it at the time. It took me awhile to figure it out and was in hindsight (Hmm..my "fibro" symptoms only occurred severely every time i ran out of pain pills! lol) so anyhow I dont think i have fibro because i dont have severe all over body pain anymore, just the damn stupid back that hurts every day.

Im sorry your in pain Worried, and eveyone eles. I feel your pain..get it.."I feel your pain"...LOL! I crack myself up. I would like to hear how people manage thier pain.
Yes, I am definitly a chronic pain suffer'er. I recenltly tried to quit pain meds a few times as it was stated by members here that my pain could be exgerated because of pain meds usage. Plus I had been on pain meds for seven years straight and the situation could have improved and I might not have known it. Even though I am in pain, I tried to stop anyways. I cant make it any longer then three days, then I cant take it anymore. I have even flushed my pills to insure I couldnt cheat after doing a taper. Only to discover, yup I AM indeed in pain and thank God a refill was due. I know,I know, people say you need to give it a few months. But when you cant even walk, I dont think it will "self heal".
I survived bacterial meninigitis and a secondary infection of sepsis.I lost all my toes and half of my left foot. They didnt just cut off the end of my foot, they had to gut the remaining part of my foot and rebuild it with muscle from my stomach and skin from my thiegh to cover it. I was actualy lucky, I went into surgey for amputations and came out like this instead.I wonder to the day if I may have been better off with the one amputation. I would have been used to it by now.
I do have pain in the right foot where they only took off the toes, but nothing like my left foot. I also have chronic ulcers, sores. I have one on each foot right now that are over a year old and they wont heal because of they are on a pressure point. This condition is very simular to what  a diabetic would experince, but Im not diabetic. If you want to read my story of the entire illness, from my point of view and my wifes, and see pictures of what i went through go to....
   http://www.meningitisfoundationofamerica.org/templates/content-view/14/index.html

The pictures are kinda graphic. I havent updated my story in years. I no longer live in Calif and am on disabilty now. Due several surgeries on my ampuations for bones infections and spurs that were poking the inside of the skin, I am in constant pain now. The nerves were disturbed during the surgeries and the result is very uncomfotable now.
My pain was well managed for seven years on vicodens.I never had a problem with them. I was on the same dose for years.I only moved up from 5 mg's to 7.5 during that period. And was also given a 20 mg time realease oxy for bedtime to make it through the night. I never thought about addiction during this time. I never abused or over medicated. I took them like I was taking a vitamen or something. I never obcessed over them, not even second thought.
Then, I had the surgeries and all hell broke loose. I could no longer control the levels with vicoden alone. My poditrist would give me some percocets on a weekly basis to help. As I took those, the vicodens performance faded even more.
I saw this one doctor and decided to switch to time release 20 mg oxy's and five mg fast acting ones for break through pain. Her theroy was also that i could just take a few pills a day instead of over eight.
The oxys got the best of me as they do so many. And the rest is history. Geez, ive busted into a life story. Im sorry for the long read.
I hope all who post on this thread have thier pain under control. Unless you have lived with chronic pain, you probebly dont really understand what we have to go through on a daily basis.
Peace,
-Dez

i have on going chronic pain, the result of a birth defect.  I have tried everything under the sun, the only thing that works for me is mscotin 60 mg s/r 2 times a day.hate taking them but that is the only thing  spinal fluid, which releaves the pressure and am good to go for another year. I joined this site because my youngest son is addicted to soma's and drinking binges. but have also learned differate medication/prescriptions for my pain.  So I guess I am talking out of both sides of my mouth.  I do not abuse my medications, do not share them and keep them hidden so know one will find them. you would think they would schedule the drainage of my spinal fluid before I get the migraine from hell but they don't a spend a week in the hospital and then is good to go

My use of hydrocodone definitely started to ease lower back pain.  Doctor visit and x-rays confirmed degenerating disks in lower spine.  Couldn't even enjoy fishing for Redfish in the Indian River Lagoon or surfing or gardening or any of the things I used to be passionate about.  Pills did not work for me very long and I just kept taking more and more (self medicating).  I think I just kept taking them to fight depression and anxiety of getting older, etc. etc. .  I am going to talk to my Dr. after this Detox is over and find a better way to deal with things.  Surely there has to be one.

Chronic pain here too!  My doctor finally diagnosed me with Fibromyalgia last Fall.  The pain has been ongoing for year. I agree that when I'm stressed the pain is worse. I cannot take Ibuprofen, or NSAIDs period.  So, Tylenol is all I can take which does nothing for me.  I've been nervous about it, but I now take darvocet and tramadol for pain.  But, I don't take every day.  I don't want to become addicted to them too.  I only take them when the pain is really bad and then if let's say today I would take a darvocet - then by Thursday if I'm in too much pain, I'll take Tramadol.  This way, I am not becoming addicted again.  I would imagine it would be very easy to become addicted to another drug to substitute it for the Lortab.  So far, it works.  But, I have to stay on top of it and know that I'm better off being clean and with a mind that is not numb and apathetic.

I've been told that taking Extra Hot Cayenne Pepper pills that it will help regulate your body including pain.  I am thinking about doing that.  Also, if you take St. John's Wort with Magnesium at bedtime - the pain is less.  I cannot take the St. John's right now and so my Fibro pain has come back.  With Wellbutrin I've been told I can't take St. John's too.  But, I've needed the Wellbutrin more lately.

Anyway, I hope you start feeling better!!!

I totally understand!! I think you are a nurse right?? Me too- and I know how physically demanding it can be! You know I slipped and relapsed about a month ago- but lately I have been taking both Motrin, Tylenol and muscle relaxers at night... it has been helping.  Also, I only work 2 days per week and the days I don't work I try to exercise and get a massage every couple weeks.

I hope you start feeling better, it is so hard to be in pain and feel like there is no relief! Good luck!

i put up with the pain for like 8 months before i finally caved and started taking the pain pills. just couldn't take it anymore-had no life.
so there are just lots of jobs i cannot do unless i want to go back to pain all the time. i am pretty much broke because of having to quit jobs and ha not very good ones to find.
but i am no more broke than i was having to buy pills all the time with a better paying job.

also i moved out west where the humidity is like nothing. it really helps. and no cold winters. that helps. do lots of stretching stuff and try to stay in real good shape. most days now it is alright.

oh also sleeping on a couch or loveseat with my legs up. something about sleeping flat jacks my back all up and wake up hurting.

hey when it comes down to it, no job is worth having to take a handful of pills everyday.

Have you talked to your doctor about other options for when your pain does return? you should if you haven't already, otherwise you and I both know what may happen. I wanted to use opiates again as SOON as the pain came back, but there really are other options too. :) take care and CONGRATS on 7 days!!!!!

This may not sound like good news, but the actual quitting of my job helped my pain a lot. I know I have chronic pain, brought to my attention by the ER, I didn't know that if you'd been in pain for more than...I dunno I think he said 7 years, then it was considered chronic at that point. I now quitting jobs is not visable for a lot of people, but maybe a break would help you, with the yoga and lots of ice!! :) I hope you're in less pain soon! take care!

A chronic pain would be me, for sure. Have tried a lot of things for several areas of back pain. Trying to stay away from too many pills......so I use hot showers a lot. Sometimes in conjunction with a yoga ball. Sometimes the yoga ball for stretching exercises by itself. Some success with topical heat applications....Walgreens capsaican has been pretty good. Havent tried to divorce the stress from the back pain - but would probably be a good idea for me to address each respectively and thoroughly..........................try different things and do whatever works for you - - - and let everybody know when you find the answer......
