Addictive Personality, is that possible?

I am new here and have just posted a question on addiction to Solpadeine and Xanax.  This posting is about Addictive personality, is there such a thing?
I developed a strong addiction to Valium for over twenty years.  Strange, these tablets were prescribed for me.
They were prescribed freely for all anxiety etc.  Then twenty years later they were suddenly the worst thing ever.
I no longer trust the medical profession, my life has been fraught with prescribed and over the counter medicines.
If I could go back and start again, with the information I now have.  Drug manufacturers would be earning less.
I would be the Erin Brocavick  of the medical world.

Please, you need to TAPER slowly from these meds. Get the prescribing Dr. on board with your decision and let them set a reasonable and safe taper for you.  Good luck and enjoy the holiday!  :)

I know what you mean, I become addicted to habit, i.e. "it's a certain time and I do the same thing, or maybe it is because my husband is like that.  he goes to bed at 12 I wake up and am free to do as I please, that is all in my head of course, but I don't want him worrying about me.
You say you are an emotional eater, more than half the first world is, we replace our needs, and longings with whatever, like the little boy in Holland who found a hole in the dam, the dam was leaking he put his finger in to stop it, we can use food, drink, drugs, SEX, religion, you name it, we put down one and pick up the next addiction.
We will get there! Life is a learning curve, you are doing good, go to the top of the class friend.  Col 107

I am now on holiday with my husband, decided to stay with meds. until I get home.  Came off them too quickly and lost control.  I don't want to ruin my husbands holiday, he didn't cause my addiction so I will wait until next week.
Thank you all for your help, it is good to know we are here for each other. Thanks once again Col107

I do believe some people can have addictive personalities, I was a nightly user of beer and smoked. I kept it to lower levels every night. I also emotionally eat. I take paroxetine for anxiety and have prescriptions for ativan, but hardly use them because doctors warned me its highly addictive. I believe I don't totally have an addictive personality otherwise I would have also abused the ativan or paroxetine. Some people would have gobbled them up. Because of my nightly use, not needed, I gave them up. I went to a recovery program for 10 months and learned the twelve step program and how to live a regular life without using. I feel so good without the obsession and without having been accountable to the recovery program, I don't believe I'd be 20 months clean and sober now. I won't be a prisoner to using ever again and I know I can never in my life have one.

Another great web site that has many tabs to click on regarding ALL aspects of addiction (plus videos and articles for each tab link) is:

hbo.com/addiction

Also, you can go to you tube and type in Pleasures UnWoven and watch 8 separate video clips by Dr. Kevin McCauley who is a recovering addict himself and has used the landscape of Utah to help describe an addict's brain.  Both those web sites blessed be A LOT!

Just a footnote to what i have already written.  When I was twenty-one I was involved in an automobile accident, I went through the windscreen. In hospital for fourteen weeks.  Eventually prescribed Valium 5, became addicted to them for over twenty years.  Pharmacies where I live in the world are not as efficient as we would wish them to be.
I will finish for now, Take care of yourself and look in the mirror you are worth the effort of living a full life as I do. Good luck friend.

I know what you mean.  I did go cold turkey on Solpadeine and Xanax, while trying to keep in touch with reality for my families sake, not a good idea.  I am going to spend a week on holiday with my husband in a place which I love.  I will use all my power, and my meditation practice to get through it as best I can.  When I get home I have a friend with whom I can turn to for balance, on line that is.
I wish you good luck, I hope I can "be here for you when you need somebody"
Thanks again

I don't have hobbies and interests, I only have obsessions. When I drink, I never let my responsibilities, family, job and hobbies get in the way. I'm totally obsessed with it. That's why I do do it any more. Along with being an addict, I have an addictive personality. Nothing in moderation.

In your first post and this post you're naming highly addictive drugs. Doesn't necessarily mean you have an addictive personality my friend. Anybody in the world can get addicted to Codeine and benzo if you use it long enough. You won't know until you stop using them. Good luck to you.
