After Care for me or NOT!!!???

After Care for me or NOT!!!???

Hey all,

I know it's been a while since I last posted.   There seem to be alot of great new support here!  Anyway, for most of you that don't know.  I am an oxy, oxycodone, perc, vicodin addict.  I have been for well over a year now.  My max dosage is usually around 120mg.  I am now back into withdraw and on day 4.  I am uncertain about this aftercare.  I know i have been trying to get clean for about 3 months now and keep struggling with relapses.  I called a program today in my small town and they want you to see the physician and go through a series of questions to see if you would qualify for the program.  They do have NA and several other support groups that you are supposed to attend while you are there.  I guess my question would be....some have said aftercare in small towns can be bad and then i have also heard others that have gone to NA meeting and most the people there were court ordered and not really into getting help.  I have been so nervous to work may way up to the next step, but i think i might need it.  Tell me some of your thoughs on aftercare and if i should attend this type of group.  I do have to pay 350 out of pocket just to see the dr.  I think he is like an addiction specialist.   Should i just find an NA meeting and go on or should i go through this designed aftercare program?  Thanks to all you guys out there who have been with me all the way.  You all are so special to me and i appreciate your support.  Jeri

I'm from a town also that's not so big. I went through the inpatient program voluntarily because I knew that was the only way for me to withdraw successfully from all the pills I was taking each day. There were a lot of people court ordered there, but many others who were there of their own choosing. If you're having doubts about what to do because of the money I'd probably try the NA meetings to begin with. Many have been successfully clean with that alone. But also remember that people are also court ordered to those too. And if someone is looking to find someone to do drugs with they'll find them whether or not they are court ordered and whether or no they are in a so called "after care"  program. Best of luck to you. Let us know what you decide to do.

Hey Jeri, I think you know the answer to the question. Neither one of us got real aftercare when we detoxed and both of us has struggled with relapse. Someone told me - the definition of insanity is doing the same thing expecting different results. I think we gotta take a different approach and give aftercare a real go. There's another thread on this page and I believe catif and addict63 really gave great advice on why aftercare is so important. I am going to give aftercare a real shot and maybe you should too. Just try out NA and get a counsellor your comfortable with. We both have our demons like every other addict and with some help maybe living without painkillers will become easier to do. Congrats on 4 days jeri! Your a terrific lady and I know you will do this.
