Am I Really an Alcoholic?

by Aradia_Trynt, Sep 05, 2009 09:08PM
I have a question, possibly a complicated question...

I have been drinking since i was 12, stopping for the duration of each of my five pregnancies...Aside from that I drink at least twice a week if not more.  I recently started taking Toprol and at first wouldn't drink out of fear of a reaction but have since started drinking at first a little and then more and more on it.

Everyone keeps telling me I am an alcoholic especially now that I am drinking on the Toprol..does this really mean I am an alcoholic?

If you need more information to give an answer please feel free to ask.. If you just want to yell at me please save it for someone else....not to be rude i've just had enough of that in my life and all I am looking for is some friendly unbiased opinions.

Thank you so much in advance for your time.

Hi hon, Noone here will yell at you. I am an addict to pain meds and not alcohol but my x-husband was an alcoholic. He would start and stop at times but always went back and thought he could just stay at a buzz. Addiction is addiction and it is progressive. If you are having family problems and can't stop drinking to end the drama then you most likely are addicted. I don't drink alcohol but if my family was upset that I was drinking too much ice tea and it was causing a lot of tension, I would stop to make everyone happy and have peace in my family. It would be no skin off my nose. Why do you need to drink alcohol? That is a question you need to analyze. Can you stop easily? For good? You came to this site so you must think you have a problem. The first step is admitting it to yourself and others. Good luck honey. I'm sorry that you are dealing with this. You don't have to do it alone:o)

It is a tough question and you are the only one who can figure answer this.
You can try going onto the AA web sites - they have questions, information that may help you figure a few things out.  You can also call and talk to volunteers there - a good place to bounce your thought and feelings off of.
I am an alcoholic and an addict - denied it for years - it wasn't until I was fed up, tired of fighting with family and friends, defending my behaviour.  I went to AA to prove them wrong - and ended up finding support, people I could related to and a way to get my life back.
Good luck - keep posting, lots of help and support here!

hi,   no yelling here, just good people trying to help.  Im an alcoholic/ addict , and take toparol as well.  Only you can answer the question about the alcoholism.  Its not always easy to admit, and not always cut and dry.  If others are telling u that u have a problem, they are usually telling u out of love, and concern.  Even though it comes out sometimes as yelling or arguments.  Do go to the questions site on aa about am i an addict, alcoholic.  It may turn on some light bulbs for you.  Take care and good luck.  pray
