Am I allergic to alcohol?

I think I may be allergic to alcohol, although the only symptom I have is burning in my stomache, and nausea after only a sip of any kind of alcohol.  I think I may be allergic to it, but just have a mild case.  Is this possible?

What happens if you have more than one sip?  Or have you only had one sip?  How big is the sip? Strong alchoholic beverages do cause a burning sensation going down and in your stomach. Haven't you ever seen someone throw back a shot on TV and make a face? I don't know about the nauseau.  Only time I ever got or get nauseous is when I drink way too much.  There are lots of informed people on here, some in the medical field, who would probably more knowledgeable about allergic symptoms.

hm  that is a really broad question,,,there are people out there that are allergice to alcohol  the sulfites etc. in beer and wine etc..some people have complained about hive, nasal congestion, and typical allergy symptoms after consuming alcohol and in very extreme cases anyphyaxis (throat swelling etc) sypmtoms have occured after drinking beer and or wine again, probably due to the sulfites which are found in wine, coolers etc..let me ask you this...do you drink often?  Do you take medication,,do you have a problem with your stomach such as ulcers, a history of ulcers, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) where you have to take meds like Prilosec, Nexium, zantac etc.?  i suppose anything is possible...like Kstuebin said above strong drinks do cause a burning sensation..maybe your doc could better answer your question..next time you go in ask him...have you noticed if this occurs when you drink on an empty stomach or a full stomach?  I hope we have helped you a bit.....take care    cin

How old are you anyway?  In my opinion, there are two basic allergies with alcohol.  One causes you to get ill enough not to ever experiment with it again.  The other one causes you to lose control and drink excessively to the point of insanity.  I have the second of the two, but it took many drinks and a few brushes with the law to realize it.  By the time you come to believe you have a problem, a lot of wreckage has occurred in your life. You can't begin to imagine how bad it gets unless you've been there!

Then there are the normal people who have no allergy and can take it or leave it.  You have to decide where you want to be  with alcohol.  J.B.

I'm 19.  The sip is usually very small, because the taste of all alcohol makes me sick.  I dont touch strong alcohol because after one shot I am throwing up the whole night.  The only things I will try to drink are light, like Midouri Sours, or wine coolers.  These make me sick far sooner than I feel any affect at all.
I know I dont have a problem with alcohol, I am just wondering if I could be allergic to it, becuase the amount I consume really shouldn't make me as nauseous as it does.

Sully I am sorry I keep hijacking your thread (I really hate that term)  I wish I had an answer for you.  I have heard of people having allergic reactions to small amounts of alcohol.

Ginger - If you are reading this could you please let me know you are ok.

Cindi - How are you feeling?  I am now suffering a horrible bladder infection.  Did you go to the Dr. after yours and what did they give you?  C ya

JBear,,I never did go for my bladder   Nurse heal thyself  LOL  except when you have pneumonia..Sully,,I would really stop drinking anything with alcohol in it...and think about it being due more to the possible stomach problems like I said in my previous post....,  cin

Gee "Doctor" Steve...thank you sooooo much for deleting my thread on how I got CLEAN from hydrocodone...golly, nobody <i>here</i> has that problem, so I can certain SEE why you did that.

To all of the WONDERFUL people who replied to me and gave words directly from their hearts- thank you SO much. I feel you all have validated my life.

Not only did he delete your post...look at the answer he gave Danielcc on his 10-13 post. He said that if the tone of this forum doesn't change...he may shut it down.I guess we all better start finding a new place to hang out....and discuss it thru email so daniellcc doesn't find out about it. I'm so damn mad at both danielcc and "doctor" steve. If we aren't allowed to laugh at ourselves and talk about what brought us to this forum in the first place (love of opiates) then what are we allowed to talk about? Are we supposed to talk in circles and not make any sense like danielcc does? Arrrrrrrrrgh! If this forum gets shut down..thanks to danielcc....he'll have to find a new place to act like a crazed donkey. My bet is he's already been kicked out of other forums.

I'd like to post my email address.  It's ***@****. Please get in contact with me if this is shut down.  Or email if you want to talk to me anytime. I would only point out to Dr. Steve that while the tone of our responses to Danielcc were rude, they were also unamimous. I think he should take into account the fact that Danielcc is well aware of how we are going to react to him and seems to enjoy pushing buttons.  I still say we should completely ignore him in the future with blank posts as I've seen done on other message boards to people everyone disagrees with.  And, Dr. Steve, the people on this board have helped me so much.  Last night was the first night I went to bed clean.  That would not have been possible without all the help and support I received here.  Dr. Steve, isn't that worth something? It certainly is to me.

Fine. Let him. I'm sorry the "tone" bothers him so much. I am a web programmer by trade and I will make us a new forum first thing tomorrow. The loving, caring, nurturing, helpful "tone" found here will be MORE than welcome on my forum.

I didn't see your post on possibly shutting down this forum but, i would like to say that if you are even considering it, that would be a very horrible mistake.
People have made the statement that this forum has even gone as far as to "save their lives".  This forum is all some people have, and to shut it down would be a terrible shame.
There are going to be people that post on any board that act as if they know everything, and talk down to others.  It is human nature to defend oneself, and an entire board shouldn't just be 'shut down' because a defending stance was made.
Look at all the positiveness of this board, and you can't tell me that this board is not worth 'keeping alive' for as long as there are people who need others to talk to, cry to, listen to and share their deepest throughts with.  We are all special gifts, and when someone comes along and hurts someone we all care about, we are going to stand up and defend that person. I'm sure you would hope for the same if you were in that position.
This board will remain alive in our hearts for as long as we all live!
Love you all!!!

Sully, it seems pretty simple to me: just don't drink.  I understand that all your friends probably drink and you're stuck sitting there and not joining in but it obviously isn't good for you for whatever reason.  If you want something to tell them, then by all means, just tell them you're allergic to alcohol.  When I was in high school, I knew a girl who was allergic and would break out in hives so there can be an alllergic reation to it. My father was an alcoholic and I was always afraid of drinking because I saw what it could do. So I would sit there at drinking parties and take tiny little sips and pretend I was drinking so I would be part of the group thing.  So I do understand why you want to be able to drink but it doesn't sound like a very good idea.

If anyone would like to email me your email address I will post it for the other members.  My email address is ***@****. The email addresses will be posted at http://www.mdo.net/users/kstuebin/aemail.html   This way we can all stay in touch with one another if this board is taken down before Beth gets a new one in place.

Last year, the rumor was that this forum was going to be taken down before Thanksgiving. Then I got an email from Med Help soliciting funds.  Maybe this is just a yearly fund drive tactic?

I'm still here, the victim of more red tape. The nurse calls me this morning wanting all my medical records from Social Security before anything can be done.  I've been a patient of the VA for two years now....and they want more proof that I have chronic liver disease?  Whoa!

Then I find out that my SS records are not being kept in my home county's SS office.  Now I have to drive 32 miles to the next county to get anything done....has something to do with my zip code number or some such BS.  Plus their phone has been busy all morning so I can't even....oh, what the hell! My blood is boiling!

Aren't you glad you asked about me?

Well, I am a newcomer so sounds like you would know better.  But I hope that Beth goes through with her threat to start a new board. To be honest, I was really offended that Dr. Steve didn't like the "tone." That "tone" and the help from everyone here is what's getting me through. That bothered me even more than him pulling threads.  Guess he just doesn't think they're signficant enough to archive and that's his call is the way I look at that. And as for Dr. Dan or whoever he is, even though I don't know the history on that, I can see he's some kind of psychopath. But the web page with email addresses of whoever wants to send them to me will be there just in case. I feel a real bond to the people here and I want to make sure we can communicate in the future.

I just believe that Dr. Steve really doesn't like any of us here.  Not many doctors do, after all.  What more can I say?

thanks for the compliment in the first thread. I would never tell someone else how to react to this waste of a perfectly good medical school diploma, but I for one refuse to beg him for anything. His total lack of effort in moderating this forum for the past one and half years is a disgrace. Want proof? Go to some of the other forums on med help and read the thoughful, considerate and HELPFUL posts by the doctors there. Then compare them to Dr Steve's. I could grab an eleven year-old off the street, teach him, oh, three phrases, and he/she could take Dr Steve's place on this forum and no one, especially Danielincc, would know the difference. I call for Dr Steve to resign and allow another doctor to moderate this forum. As far as I'm concerned, Dr Steve, you're fired.

One thing I have never understood about Dr. Steve is that if he really cares about addicts why does he only come to this forum every couple of weeks to help.  Some of the people that get to write questions are desperate and waiting for his help could kill them.  And why does he limit it to one a day driving people to put a question on a thread and beg someone to help.  If not for the help of our own Dr. Thomas and so many others so many people would still have all their problems.

I am not worrying about this anymore...I wrote to medhelp,,as far as I know Cindy and Phil....I told them the way I felt about the total inappropriateness of the comment by DR. Steve and the fact that because we don't play by dan's rules that we are low life's who don't want help.....and please don't you or anyone else take this in the wwong way but DAN IS on Methadone...not that that is necessarily a bad thing in my eyes...I could care less,,Methadone can be a very good thing for alot of people but there are alot of meetings that won't recognize your clean time if you are on methadone...so,, if we get him off the methadone can he actually stay clean?  can he actually work a program   tons of peope can and do everyday,,,i, myself have thought about meth just for the chronic pain alone....can  dan do it?  and still have the balls to preach?  and has Dr. steve ever been addicted to anything in his life?  probably not....it sure does not sound like it,....I'm sorry to ramble on   and like I said please do not misconstue what I have said about meth....but let's see if dan can get off the meth and still preach..........love cin

Hello to everyone!.  This is the first time that I have ever used this site, but I read with interest the amount of other people who suffer from allergic reactions to alcohol.

I am an Asian Australian male, and I believe that I may suffer from what is known as 'Asian flush' when I consume even small amounts of alcohol.  This is an extremely embarrassing condition that causes my whole face, neck and eyes go extremely red, and my chest feels like it is about to explode.  Also, my heart rate increases greatly.

I have read that this condition is due to having an extra enzyme that breaks down alcohol in the body.  I understand that this enzyme is defective and actually causes a negative reaction with alcohol.  I know that this is not a very technical diagnosis, but I was wondering if there was any one out there who would know of any kind of drug that could help curve this kind of reaction with alcohol.

As I said, this is a very embarrassing situation and it not only effects me physically, but emotionally as well.  I have a hard enough time trying to fit in with other Australian people (due to the way I look), and this condition just makes it even harder for me to be accepted by friends and acquaintances.  I cannot go out and have a good time by partying and having a couple of drinks without my face turning into a beetroot and at times, fell like I am going to pass out!  This even occurs when I have about a half a glass of beer.......

I would appreciate any kind of advise or words of wisdom.  Anyone please feel free to email me on - ***@****

Thank you for your time,

Tim....

Hello, I don't know if this discussion room is used often, but I figured I'd post my question any see if I get any answers. I knew that you could be allergic to alcohol, I just don't know the effects. A year ago I was drinking at a house party with my friends and we were drinking long-island ice tea mix. I blacked out after two or three drinks, although still physically capable of walking around and kind of talking, I lost a good chunk of time during the night and cannot to this day recall what happend. Apparently I was date raped, but I do not remember it. I thought maybe I was drugged, but after going to the doctors a couple days after, it was too late to test for those types of drugs as they had already passed through my system. Than on new years of this year, I had a pina coloda with Rum in it. I had some minor black outs throughout the night and I'm starting to believe that I may be allergic to Rum or at least to the additives in Rum. This is a really scary and emotional matter for me and I've been searching for answers and closure. I know now that I will never feel comfortable drinking again, especially Rum. I just wonder, can I be allergic to Rum but not feel any physical side effects,  just mental ones??? If anyone can provide me with some kind of insight into this matter, you would never know how much that would help me. Thanks for your time.
