Am I being stupid about this?

by kngig, Apr 06, 2009 08:27PM
I have been off vics for 29 days now and God knows it ain't been easy! I had been taking them for 2 1/2 yrs for arthritis pain and recovery from both knees being totally replaced. I'm 39 and have had arthritis all my life. I knew I was addicted to them and was taking 20-25 per day. Finally I ran out and the Dr. would not call anymore in and I said now is my chance to get away from them and so far so good, I even found 2 the other day while cleaning out my purse and I threw them away.(that felt good) So today I go to the Dr. for refills on my regular meds, (thyroid stuff) and a fluid pill that helps my joint inflammation, and he was a total ***! He says "well don't you need your vicodin script?" And I told him I wasn't taking that anymore, and he said "you became dependent on them didn't you?" I said yes, and he said "Yes, when you get a script from me and another Dr. on the same day, that can be a problem!" I felt like a big ole junkie! I did have 2 scripts, but not the same day, and he knew I was trying to cut back, why'd he have to be so hateful? I thought he might have been pleased that I was off of them. I was so ashamed. I didn't mean to get hooked. I thought he would be more understanding, He's always kinda intimidating, I don't know maybe I am being over sensitive. Oh, by the way, coming to this site has been a huge help for me. I'm glad you all are here.

Hello! First of all congrats on getting clean thats awesome! As I dont have much room to give advice (going to start outpatient treatment myself for vics/percs on the 29th) I do know a little about addiction because my husband is an ex meth addict from years back and while he was in treatment and going to NA meetings (which I went to with him) I learned alot. The way your dr treated you is awful! Not only does it take alot to admit you have a problem but especially telling your Dr yourself and him treating you that way. Your doing a GREAT job, keep it up! One thing I do know is that its hard to understand addiction unless you've been there yourself so I think your Dr needs some educating before he judges next time! Vicoden is highly addictive and it can happen to anyone. So to answer your question I dont think you were being too sensitive at all! Keep up the good work :)  ~Courtney
