Anaesthesia to help withdrawal?

Anaesthesia to help withdrawal?

So... I have heard through the grapevine that a person can go to a hospital, or drug addiction unit, and be put under light anaesthesia while they undergo withdrawing from pain medication. I think it is just for the first day to get them through the worst part of it. Have any of you heard of this, or done it? I am very interested in this. I want to get the withdrawal over as quickly as possible.

|   rapid detox and it's dangers
Jan 13, 2008 08:57AM - 0 comments

Here is an article on rapid detox for all who a considering it

The dangers of rapid-detox drug treatment
The Ontario Coroner's Office is investigating a second death connected to a chain of drug treatment clinics that offer a a highly controversial treatment that has divided addiction experts. So-called "rapid detox" treatment uses a cocktail of medications to speed through the withdrawl (withdrawal) process while the patient remains under sedation. As part of the procedure, the patient is implanted with a pellet of the opate antagonist Naltrexone to prevent them from having intense cravings or obtaining any "high" from opiates once the treatment is complete.

At first glance this sounds like it could be a great procedure -- why suffer through weeks of withdrawl (withdrawal) symptoms when you can get through the worst of it in a few hours while unconcious? However, some experts claim it is biologically impossible to fast-track withdrawal and that the dangers of the procedure are not worth the potential payoff.

The Toronto Star has a very detailed investigation in to the latest death, including a lot of background information on the procedure for those who may be curious about pursuing it. It looks to be somewhat of a last-resort option, but it seems to me it won't do you much good being clean if there's a good chance that you'll die in the process

I guess this is for someone who has alot of money and thinks this will be very easy...dangerous always to a certain extent to sedate a patient...they just sleep thru WDs ..usually they wake up and put them on sub...i have not read what happens after that..then they taper from the sub...then there is the mental aspect of the whole thing that has gotten me worst of all.....alot of money and safety is very questionable

Any medical procedure involving anesthesia weighs risk.  If you can recall the breast implant incedent as an i.e.  Procedure remains extremely expensive beginning anywhere from (I stand to be corrected) 5,000 - 10,000. I am aware of quite a bit of success stories.  Sadly it is often that news travels fast,  bad news travels faster.  Check out success stories as well as episodes of death.  Comparing odds may help factor in your decision.  Good luck.
