Anyone ever used selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for methadone wd?

I'm just wondering if anyone here has ever used anti-depressants to help them cope with the depression that comes with and after methadone withdrawal. I'm having some depression problems today, day 8 with no methadone. I have some Celexa left over from a couple years ago. I took it for a few months after a very close friend died. The Celexa is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Anyone know anything about this? I'm tempted to take one of the antidepressants. I actually have about a month's supply of them (30), and it just dawned on me that they could be quite useful during this time. Any advice?

I would be careful with the celexa. I felt like I wanted to shoot myself on that ****. I swithed to Lexapro-witch is an antidepressant that helps with the anxiety after about 3 weeks. Use Caution!

Yes, I took Welbutrin when I got off done. It helped because I was a basket case then but then had to get off of that this year but it was helpfull after getting off of the done

Thanks to you both. I might try starting a few weeks on Celexa later this morning. mobass, I think the Lexapro and Celexa are very similar meds. Mood swings are weird. I feel pretty ok one minute, then yesterday, had the overwhelming urge to hide in my room and cry....so I did, for about 30 minutes. Felt better after awhile and got up. I'm generally in an ok mood. I think the wd's are playing with my brain.

The w/ds will definitely do that.I think there were times during my methodone detox that the mental part weighed heavier on me then the physical w/ds.Although the physical part was no picnic either. The tissue companies got a boost in their sales my first 2 weeks.LOLI don't know anything about anti-depressants.I just wanted to let you know I can relate to what you are feeling and to reassure you it does get soooooooo much better.Hang in there. You're doing great....Peace...

I had some issues with moodswings after detoxing off methadone, & for me it was a unfamilar feeling, because when I was on methadone I hardly had feelings, I never cried, then once off methadone, this all changed in a big way, I found myself crying for no reasons, & just wanting to be left alone. After a few weeks, the depression went away, but the anxiety & problems with sleep didnt, so I got onto trazodone, its a anti-depressant that helps with sleep. Some antidepressants can take 4-6 weeks to really begin to take affect on a person, I may be wrong? By the way, it sounds like your doing really well, I know detoxing from methadone is quite a battle, but it does get better, their were many days that I thought, it would never get better, but it did, you,ll see. Take Care Penelope

I started the Celexa this morning, and think I'll try it for awhile. I know I've heard it takes weeks for some anti depressants to work. But when i take Celexa, I can tell within an hour or two that I've taken *something*. It makes me feel different..better..hard to explain. Still no methadone today, but took 10mg of hydro at 10:30am, after a hot bath. I'm determined to not take any methadone. If I can just get off the hydros....

I was so numbed by years of done , I couldn't experience regular emotions except anxiety and depression. The effexor helped but it got in the way after a few years but was good for a time to re-adjust.
