Anyone use 5HTP for mood?

by CleandUP, Mar 31, 2008 02:09PM
Hey guys, just wondering if any of you have tried using 5-HTP supplements to help for mood. It is a precursor to Seratonin and I have just started today. I took one any I am supposed to increase my intake every 3-5 days by one pill until I get to taking 4 pills a day (twice a day)

Just wondering if this or any other mood supplements helped for the mental part of clean. Thanks!!

Another member recommended it to me, I just haven'e gotten it yet, but I plan to. It sounds like it works like prozac, that's an SSRI.

Yes it really can help.  There is more info in the Health Pages in the Amino Acid Protocol.

It not only helps with mood, it can also help rebuild the brain chemistry that has been depleted by drug use.

I used it with Ltryrosine and magnesium ,calcium....... However if you are on a tricyclic antidepressant or an ssri you cant take L'tyrosine , and 5hpt it can cause a spike in blood pressure

Avis is right. It can also cause serotonin syndrome. Check any med interactions.

FL brings up a  good point that not many people know about serotonin syndrome ,I don't know what you are coming off of but if its ultram or tramadol plz wait until you are done taking it to add anything that raises your seration level.

Wow, I don't want serotonin syndrome. That can be fatal!! So is it a good idea for me to take 5-HTP or no? I am not taking ssri or antidepressants. I was using vicodins for nearly a year.

by FLaddict, Mar 31, 2008 03:08PM
You can only get serotonin syndrome if you mix 5HTP with a anti depressant or a drug like Ultram that produces serotonin activity.

CleandUP, you will be fine if you are not taking any of those. If helped me alot in the begining of my clean time.

I was also on hydro's and not taking those others and it has been more helpful than I can even say.

well this is really all confusing.
i take an anti depressant and was told by my psyc dr to take 5-htp at night to help me sleep.

because of a major depression following the death of my father she put me on abilify 2 mg. i went off tramadol and was advised to try l-tyrosine and l-theanine.

well something is working. i'm the best i've ever been, but am concerned.

one, when would i suffer symptoms of serotonin syndrome.right away? a week from now?
and what are the symptoms
