Babies that are born with Methodone addiction

by bluebird, Jul 15, 2001 12:00AM
What are the long term effects and prognosis for a child that was born from a mother who was on methodone. Has any work been
done in this field. Our grandson fits into the above category and
we are worried about what his future might hold.

Thanks for your response to my question. My wife and I are the
legal guardians of our grandson and we find your answer very reassuring. The only problem he had at birth was to have to be weened off of methodone. He is now a very healthy boy just starting full time school. He is however a boy and a mischievous one at that. We were worried about the effect that methodone could have on him in the future but we will worry less now. thanks a million.

i am a mom that had my son born dependant to methadone his paternal grandparents have him. my son did have complications/
birth defects. I hear he's doing great; and he's loved and cared for very well. as a mom to another child clean, sober and healthy, i still wonder what if i was never a junky! i've been a junky since 19 being nearly 26 i finally see the light.my heart breaks to hear of these situations, because I've once been there myself. sincerely, recovery mom

i am a mum of 4 beautiful girls,2 were born methadone dependant{last 2},my 5 yo had no complications, she is beautiful, smart and starting school next year.i was on 70mgs with her pregnancy.on the other hand, my 9month old,i was only on20mg with her pregnancy, yet she hung out severly, she has weaned off 6 months ago,and just about her every wakig moment, she screeches, not cry normally.this situation is very distressing and im leftwondering whether the methadone played abig part.i was also weanig off xanax while i was pregnant.could that be a reason? i was told that a feotus would be better off with higher doses.is this true?

My first child (12) was born with speed in his system. They didnt take him from me and I quit using after that. He had no complications (I know its not the same thing as methadone). He lives with his paternal grandparents but thats a whole 'notha story. He does well in school, sports and everything else.
Im very lucky. And lemme add that I was VERY STUPID.

My grandaughter is addicted to darvoset and is nursing her 5 month old baby. Is the baby getting effects from her Mom's darvoset? She vomits most of what she nurses? Help!

Can someone please help me.... I have been going through the forum here and I hear a lot of what I aam going through. My step daughter has been an addict for at least 7 years. She is now 19 gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, addicted to Methadone because she was on heroin and ended up in jail and they put her on it she was 7 months pregnant when she started taking it. The baby is with me his Grandmom and His Grandfather. We have had him since he left the hospital. Now we almost have him wheened off the methadone and mom now at a half way house is wanting to take him from us. He is now 3 months old. I need to know what to look for when he is off completely. I know with every decrease it has been a long hard adjustment. He screams for no reason. He wakes up during the night at least 3 times. He sneezes all the time. He has all the signs now... what am I in for and is it a good idea for Mom to take him? She only sees him 4-6 hours every Saturday, now. That would totally disrupt his schedule and all he is used to. Any suggestions on what to do?????
