Can my insurance drop me for suboxone?

Can my insurance drop me for suboxone?

The title of the thread says it all. Im considering going to a sub doc but im worried if I try to use my insurance to pay for it, they will drop me from my fathers employee health insurance for being a drug addict. Can they do that?

Im thinking ill be better off just buying subs off the street but would like some clarification on the possible consequences I might incur by visiting a sub doc and trying to use my health insurance to pay for the doctors visit and prescription.

Morning!

If you can find a doctor who will except your insurance it will be close to a miracle. Most, almost all, want cash. If you have prescription coverage then it will be helpful to pay for the medication itself. It is quite expensive. I don't know about your particular insurance but I doubt it will be an issue.

I'm a little concerned that you mentioned getting them on the streets. I hope you have done your research on Suboxone and understand that it is a program, not just a pill. Your doctor should set you up with counseling and you should engage in some form of outside support. The idea is to take this time to get your life in order and get to the root of your issue. It is not something to be taken lightly and if you don't follow it correctly you will be back here talking about Suboxone withdrawal. That being said, know that you will have withdrawal from it either way but if you have the tools to deal with it you have a better than average chance of getting through it.

I hope you stick around and talk to people who have completed the program. Listen to them about the pros and cons.

Gosh that is quite disheartening that it is not likely that I will be able to find a sub doc who accepts insurance. I am very aware of how expensive it costs at the pharmacy which is one of the reasons why I posted this thread. But that just ***** that most sub docs wont take insurance. From what ive read, I would be looking at $300-500 simply for an office visit with a sub doc, which I simply cannot afford.

And the main reason I am considering seeing a sub doc is because ive tried numerous times to quit after being addicted for the past 4 years. The depression and demotivation is what always gets me back on the opiates. My most successful attempt I lasted 3 months but ended up giving in due to the depression and boredom and demotivation continually getting worse and worse (yes even after being clean for 3 months my paws symptoms were still getting worse). So ive decided maybe its time to try something a little more long term to try to get my life in order before kicking the pills completely.

Normally I use the 100mcg/hr fentanyl patches because they are the most cost efficient way for me to stay not sick, given the fact that they last 3 days per patch. Last time I went cold turkey from these patches, for some reason I hardly w/d at all, it was much much less intense than when I went c/t from 2 oxy80s a day. And im well aware of the fact that suboxone has its own w/d as well, after all its still an opiate.

If I do end up taking sub on the long term ill most likely end up switching to a different opiate with a much shorter half-life before going c/t. Ive already developed my own "w/d regimen" from the many, many times ive been through opiate w/d, that pretty much 100% eliminates all w/d pain (for me atleast). But I wont bother to share because it could be dangerous for other people as well as the fact that most people wouldnt approve of my method, but it has worked for me many many times in the past (as far as getting through acute opiate w/d) so I by all means plan to use it next time I go c/t. Its just every time ive tried to quit taking opiates (ive gone c/t every time) over the years I always end up going back to them. Thats why im thinking maybe this time ill try something long term and see if I cant get some better results this time.

But yea, thats a real bummer that pretty much all the sub docs dont take insurance.

I don't think an insurance company could drop you because that would be discrimination.  Your insurance rates might go up because you are a higher risk patient.  I have insurance that covers 80% of drug programs and doctors.  Call your insurance and ask.  Calling and asking questions cannot hurt because of the HIPPA laws.  DO NOT GET IT OFF THE STREETS LIKE IBKLeen said.  This drug has to be dosed properly according to your height and weight and usage and has to be tapered carefully.  Sub is not any easy way out.  I understand some people have to take it but I just want you to know that you then have to WD from Sub.  Good luck!  Call your and your doctor to get correct and safe information.  It shows a lot of strength that you want to get help.
