Clonidine to help?

Just wanted to know a little more about the "clonidine" hopefully "Ga Guy" will see this since the "detox" that is where my question is coming from.  Can I go to my regular MD (as much as I do not want to have to tell her) and she can prescribe it?  Or do I have to go to a psychiatrist or someone who specializes in addiction to help me out with maybe adding that to my detox plan?  Are regular family doctors familiar and used to being ask to aid in detoxing from medication? Also, is it worth it?  It would be really hard for me to go in there and tell her (I feel so embarrassed) but if it makes a difference I would be willing to do it.  This is going to be the toughest time and first time I have quit just because I want to.  I know it is not going to be easy and I will get many urges to give in and put it off.  If that medication will make it more bearable I want to get an appointment asap since I this is day 1 of my tapering.  Thanks to anyone who can help me on this one.  : )

Thank you all for the info on this issue.  I just made an appointment for next Thursday, I will be tapered down quite a bit by then, hopefully it will be soon enough.  I'm more worried about the days after I take the last single pill, I'm thinking that from the point the next (4-7) days are going to be the ones I'm going to need the extra help.

Again, thanks

I got mine from my gyno after my last surgery. She knew it was for withdrawls because I called her (on a sunday no less) while she was on call and told her I was out for 24 hours and DYING. It was mostly in my head at that point but knew the next day would get physical. She gave me 90 with a refill, 15 vicodins to get me thru to my next appt. and phenergan for nausea. If you have one understanding doctor, youll get what you need to get thru this.

Everyone swears by Clonidine.  I was not able to take it as I have a conduction problem with my heart and have a low pulse rate anyway.  It totally zonked me...my bp would drop to like 70/45 or some ridiculous thing like that.  It is definately worth a shot.  And don't feel embarassed to talk to your doctor about this.  They are doctors and have heard lots worse, believe me.  Besides, they usually respect you for being honest with them.  Not ALL of them, mind you, but a lot of them.

I agree with everyone..it does help immensely..and any doc should prescribe it no problem. There's a pill and a patch. Go the pill route.
