listen to ochooked, he's the one who actually used the 21 day method and was successfull. I dont know the exact dosages and tapering that are done with the 21 day method, Im on 4month plan, Im on lower dose than Im prescribed because I understand the withdrawls are going to be hard, but I also know they are gonna be easier than what I would have had to go through if I didnt get on suboxone. I had a horrendous drug habit that entailed many different substances, mainly opiates and cocaine, but many others aswell, so listen to Ochooked he's the man. But if you do have any questions for me feel free to send me message/note. Good luck james

It is also good when u taper to hand ur pills over to someone u trust and let them dole them out to you each day.... pick a QUIT day and stick to it no matter what happens..tapers can be hard for many addicts..write it out and try ur best to stick to it..take a few days off work and get thru it...post often and get support.

The key to tapering on the 21 day plan is to start at the lowest effective dose --- which is usually much lower than the Sub doctor will start you at.   I was on a  large amount of Oxy but I managed to lose the W/D's by taking only 2 mg twice a day --  You must let your own body determine the need for Sub relief ---- how???   After being in W/D for a few hours (10) take 1 or 2 mg sub and wait 30 minutes -- if the W/D's are gone that is the most you should take twice a day ---- if you are still hurting, take another small piece.  Go no more than 3 days at this dose and then begin cutting your pills into small pieces and by the 21st day you should jump off.   Now, let me add---   I did this perfectly according to the 21 day taper - ---  I am now at day 14 with NO Sub or opiates and still going through periodic W/D's --  like waves that hit and when they do, I go hide for an hour or two until they subside --- hot/cold/shakes/neauseated, sweats, etc.  All I want to say (and not meant to discourage - only to let you know the truth) is that Sub will not do all the work --  You will still have to 'gut it out' at some point.  It is called the "Suboxone Spanking" by some ---  A price to pay but I am getting better day by day and am sooooooo glad I found this site and all the wonderful people who were willing to get clean themselves and then reach back for those us still struggling with addiction. Hardly ever a harsh word - only different opinions but all with one thing in mind - -  to help those who struggle to get clean.  Well, just my two cents - - All the best.

I have been taking 15 to 20 5mg Vics or 40 mg oxy codone 3-5 times a day for about three months and 5mg vics 3 or 4 at night before that for 4 months. I have been take subutox for 2 days. I finaly feel normal and not like Im chasing something all day long. My doctor wants to maintain me on this medication to give time to address some of my behavioral issues. I don't agree and want to detox ASAP. Can you explain the 21 day method or tell me where I can get info on it.

Thanks Mimi1313.  I want to do this so badly, everytime I think I am ready, my dr. appointment is around the corner and I think, one more month and then I will.  Taking this med is causing me to be depressed and I basically feel like a terrible person, I feel guilty all the time!!  Did you taper off of them and if so, how long does it take to feel normal again?

To taper its best to cut back 1 pill per say for 4-5 days. Then cut back 1 more pill for 4-5 days. Once you get to 3 pills a day cut them in half and space them as far apart as you can. Then take 1/2 pill a day away for 4-5 days until you get to 1/2 or 1/4 pill.

How exactly did you taper off of the norco?  I want to do that so badly but am never able to follow through.  How long do the withdrawals last and when do you begin to feel like your old self again?

I feel like if I knew exactly what to expect and how long to expect it, I might be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Thanks for any advice and suggestions.

Looking to be back to normal.

Always better to just taper whatever drug you are taking right now, than switching over to sub. You really shouldnt consider it until you tried tapering or straight up quitting first, those are always or should be the 1st options. Sub is no joke, as you've heard and is basicly the last option for getting clean. Im currently on suboxone(4mg) and everything is going fine, but I do wish that I would have known about the 21 day method at the time I started, it seems to be a more appropriate way of using suboxone. However that doesnt mean it wont be successful with longer term use, just will make the w/d's worse. If you can believe you can quit, then dont let suboxone even into your mind, just concentrate on what you know you can do. You have to believe it to achieve it...Good luck in your journey and keep posting here for some added support and guidance.

Please no Sub... I was on Sub for 4 months, thought it was the miracle drug.. Little did I know... Tried to taper and quit Sub.. Good Luck with that.... Its the Devil.. I had to go back on Norco's to lose the Sub, took about a month, then I tapered the Norco, and here I am 6 months clean.. Feel great!  You can do this and believe me its worth it.. You go 89, don't give up...  Get your life back.... No Sub......

Ditto to what Uphill said above.   I am now about to enter day 14 off of a very tiny amount of Sub.   If I had only known 'then' what I know now, I would have tapered and gotten someone to dispense my pills and gotten clean that way.   If anyone thinks that Sub will make it painless - you really are only switching from one drug to another and have no idea of the power of Sub.  Yes, it will stop the W/D's but (OMG) just wait until you try to let Sub go -- - it wants to be married forever and won't divorce you without some major battles.  At any rate, I do understand the power of addiction and the help Sub has been to some ----  but also many doctors who prescribe it have no idea what it is capable of ----- or perhaps they do but love the money too much and keep their clients supplied in dope for years.   If you want to fool yourself that you are off drugs and still taking Sub, go for it.   Anyway, like sadinmichigan said, this is a lively debate and I am happy that almost without fail, everyone is very civil to each other for their differing opinions -- -lots of class on this site.  All the best, no matter which way you chose.

thankyou for this post..I am sure you have noticed that the debate (if you want to call it that) about sub can get a little heated..everyone of course needs to do all there research including reading what others such as yourself has to say about it..

COLD TURKEY... My Sub withdrawals were worse that oxy or vic...Im on day 31 and still feel them.

If you really want to quit taking opiates...cold turkey or go to your Dr. for Clonodine and a short term benzo or sleep aid.

Hindsight, I wish I would have gone cold turkey and saved the $2000 I spent on Sub treatment...still had to withdrawal from the sub. Yes, I know I am biased against sub.

I didn't inform myself very well when I got into the program. I just wanted to get clean. I thought this magic pill was going to make me all better really fast. Before I knew it I was addicted to Sub.

I wanted to quit right away...I didn't realize what i was getting into.

If you don't think you can quit opiates and you need a stable taper and counseling...then Sub might be for you.

Cold turkey. Suboxone should be used when you have tried other ways to quit and were unsuccessful.
