Conversion from Percocet 5xd to Methadone-breakthrough

After a fall from a tree while banding migrating birds in 1985 I sustained multuple compression
lumbar fractures with concomitant bilateral severe leg neuropathy -went through suggested surgery and physical
therapy programs as well as different drug pain cocktails -little relief from daily pain is the result at this time!!
Question is wisdom of conversion to Methadone (only long drug history to be truely pain reliever
in chronic pain syndrome patients such as me.
Need expert advise of adding methadone to my current stable dose ineffective percocet dose
so i can do activities of daily living without having my average pain score of 8-10 daily
on my current Percocet 5xd regimen

I think there are other,stronger,longer acting pain meds to try first before making that jump to Methadone. What does your doctor say about it?
