Crack/bi-ploar/diabetes

by Carol Gates, Jan 27, 2000 12:00AM
My 27-year-old son has been diagnosed with both borderline personality disorder and bi-polar disorder, he is doing crack cocaine and marijuana daily and often adds alcohol to that.  To complicate it all he has insulin dependent diabetes.  He has attempted suicide  once and is threatening again.  He has no medical insurance and although he calls often crying and begging for help--he will only follow medical advise short-term.  It's a parent's nightmare.  He lives in Columbus, Ohio.  We have no idea how or where to get him help for all his complicated inter-related problems.  While he was under 18 he was covered by our insurance and was constantly in treatment and that is when we got him diagnosed.  But where do we turn now? The hospital where he was taken after the suicide attempt only kept him until he was through the crisis and then just turned him loose again.  Can anyone help me?
Thank you very much.

My heart goes out to you, my son is 25, although he has not had the tough time your son has,he was/is an addict, that took many years of suffering ( as a parent) and working hard to get him into a program, ( no insurance) they do have state run programs, yes when I walked in one, I was heart broken, but that was also one of his bottoms,.....my son does not drink nor has diabetes.
I on the other hand, was just diagnoised, 9 months ago type1, (I'm in my late 30's)and a drinker often, but can say the highs and lows that come with substance abuse, and diabetes, well yeh I am not suicidal but can say there are times I did not want to live. Please, Please try to get your son into a "detox" program,
and then he can learn to live with his decease, if not the only thing from one parent to another ( which is VERY hard) "let go and let god"
blessing to you,
