I have a prescribed 80mg oxycontin, but don't need the entire thing. I am at the end of my injury and need less relief. I know its time released, but how would it effect the release if its cut as close to perfectly in half as possible?
If it's prescribed, why don't you just ask the dr for a smaller mg pill? I know 'they' say don't cut it but I got off it by doing just that. Oh, do you mean you just have one pill left and you are going to taper off using that one pill?
Yes, I only have one left and I don't want the whole thing. People say different things from its fine to cut it to you can't cut it because the whole thing will release at once. The time release can't be just in the cover. The cover melts pretty quick. If I cut it as "in half" as I can, I know some will be released more quickly than it is designed to, but certainly the entire half won't release at one time. Keeping in mind that 1/2 is 40 mg oxy, but not quite so time released now. It's meant for a bi phasic release one in approx 45 minutes and another in 7 hours, with the cover intact.
Meaning it should be cool to cut the pill in half. I don't want to take too much, or have too much released in my system. Obviously I will be affecting the time release, but it has to be in the granuales, not just the cover as the cover would melt almost immediately anyway. Surely a little more will release this way from the side of the pill that has been cut, but not tooooo much???
the time release is not thtat outer cover its through hte entire pill but like i siad wheni broke them in half wheni had an addiction there wasnt much of a difference im not gonna give you a deff yes or no im just syain i couldnt tlell a diff when i broke htem in half i mean i used to chew 2 or 3 of them and couldnt tell htem difference if it were whole or not
Well I don't mean to put you on the spot, I just don't want to overdo the oxy. It would be easy to get used the great feeling it gives you. I think these few 80s were overkill and won't let doc do that again. It was only a few and I am fairly opiate tolerate as a CP patient on Norco. What mg are you talking about. This is an 80 mg I have.
I said I'm a CP patient. I may be physically addicted to the Norco, my regular medication but only had the oxycontin for a very short time. I see no use to waste the prescription. I posted on the wrong forum actually looking for the Pain Management Forum, but truth is the folks here had the answer to my question and the other forum didn't.
This is not a 12 step program for me. I have no guilt for possession of this legal oxycontin prescription, that I will use for my pain. My question was can I cut it in half, which in itself is a taper off the drug. I wanted to know if I would screw up the time release mechanisms in the pill.
BTW Moutrin does nothing to help my pain. Thank you for the suggestion if that is what it was. I respect where you are coming from but your mission is not necessarily my mission.
The time release is in the outer coating. Cutting it will disable the coating releasing the oxy at a faster pace. That why the bottle say's do not crush or chew b-4 swallowing!!! It will not hurt you but it will hit you a little harder and faster. I used to chew mine all the time and there is a big difference between chewing and swallowing whole.
Thanks for your input. I have already split it and took it hours ago. I am tapering off, by taking the one pill, cutting it in half, half today, and the last of it tomorrow. The effect was not really very different at all. I was surprised that it split evenly and without dusty powder, like granuales, with not much spill. The outer "candy coating" would have melted halfway down my throut anyway. Thank you though for helping me with the truth.
Funny, i posted here by mistake earlier, looking for the Pain Management Forum. I found it then posted the same question. I got NO answers there, but this page full here. Some people here care about telling the truth, thats cool.
i've found that a lot of the forums seem empty here...but this one is really active so i ask all kinds of health/addiction/depression questions here if i have them. even the depression forum is kinda slow.
What is your reasoning for cutting the Oxys? You do not want to crush OR cut that tablet. The function of an extended release tablet is based on several things.1. the osmotic gradient between the contents of the bi-layer core (thats the tablet in two layers) and 2. the fluid in your GI track. Drug delievery remains constant as long as the osmotic gradient remains constant and then gradually reduces itself to zero. Now if this tablets outer shell is broken or the fluid in the GI track is increased or decreased, it would greatly effect the absorption of this pill causing tooo much or tooooo little of the drug getting into your system. I would not even risk it. 80mg is suppose to be extended over a 8-12 hour period meaning its only designed to deliver about 10 mg and hour. The worst that may or may not happen is you could get a 80mg dose at once instead of 10 mg. That is 8 times more then what you should. Or you may not get anything at all depending on your GI track. Please be careful and get a new script.......
Thank you for your detailed description. I am done with the oxycontin. I am sorry that I posted this on this forum. It was a mistake. The time release factor was not disturbed when the pill was split almost perfectly in half. I simply did not want the whole thing and I'm not going to get a new script for 1 pill. In my way, it was a taper. The time release seemed to be in the granulales not in the outer layer. The white granuales inside would have been exposed halfway down my throat anyway. I did NOT want it to powder. I did not want to get high on it. I used the lst 80 to taper down as effectively as knowledge could help me. It is all over now and aparently the "osmodic gradient" remained constant. Thank you very much for your concern though. I will not get oxycontin again and would have refused them this time had I been aware of their power. I am a CP patient (Chronic Pain for you Beach), that takes Norco regularly for constant pain. The oxycontin was a very short term thing for a serious cut that almost took half my hand.
To a person that seems to care. Beach I can tell that you care about folks. I respect your mission and wish you luck. Perhaps we will meet again, if I am welcome in the forum. No one has welcomed me. I do not thing the meds are a casual thing and maintain a steady fear of them. Good day to you.
Maybe your doctor can give you something stronger then Norco for your cut if it is still bothering you. Did you feel WDS when you took the Oxy and is that why you needed to taper?Did you get this from a friend and does your doctor know?Regardless, that is your business, just be careful next time with any of those time-release. The outer layer is only a protective shell, the inner-layer is the time release part not the granulales. Granulales are found only in time-release capsules and doe work the way you said in a capsule form. But Oxy is in a tablet form. Please know that my description pertains to a tablet. The time-release action is differrent in a tablet. If you are willing to take it one time then you may be willing to take it again, and just because it didnot kill you this time doesnt mean it wont kill you if you try it again. I know a great website for Oxy releated deaths DT cutting, smashing and crushing those tablets. Even just doing it once. Be careful, and my advice is because I am a nurse and I do care.
I won't cut another one. I felt no need to taper but the guilt manifested from this site, told me to use that word. I didn't take them long enough to get addicted to the oxy. I have a fear and respect for them. Yes the inner layer is the time release part. From this one experience I am telling you that the cut was precise, it did not powder up, and the time release factors did not seem to be affected. I would NEVER Crush one or chew one. Why do you think I asked on this forum about cutting it, becuase I have that fear of the drug. And thank you for caring. I know you are genuine and your way is a good one. God love you.
Thank you. I did cut it, it did work fine and it is gone. As I said in some posts the time release properties appear to have worked fine. I have no reason to ever get any more of them and I do maintain a respectful "fear" of them or any other opiate. Anway thanks. You do good work my friend.
