DOC'S RECCOMENDATION

by LADYQUITTER, Jun 29, 2001 12:00AM
I am a 29 year old female who just got married and quit smoking  all in the past four months!  When my husband and I moved to our new home, I went to see a doctor at the local clinic to get all set up  with an new obgyn doc etc. At this time I had a physical with a family practitioner who wanted to asses my health. I informed him that I had somked from 17-29 about 1/2 pack a day. He did some tests to check my lung capaciity and a chest x-ray to check things out. All looked good and he said I should live a long life if I stay off the smokes. He then suggested that to improve my odds of staying healthy 30-40 yrs down the road,I should attempt to have one serving of leafy green vegeatbles per day and have one tomato product a day, and some fruit.  He said these dietary changes(I ate a poor diet)  may be the next best  defense, other than quitting, to improve my long-term health. Is he right?  Are there any other foods/ supplements with may help? Also, is there any evidence that quitting before 30 lowers cancer rates among smokers or by 30 is  too late?

You should be very proud of yourself quitting smoking. I've smoked for 30 years and my chances of dying from smoking is great.  Both my wonderful parents died from lung and brain cancer caused by smoking. My father was only 64 and my mom just 68, both looked much younger. I am 43 years old, and so far my lungs are ok, but this of course is temporary. Best Wishes to you, I believe, only in my opinion, that having quit you are so young you are sure to live a long long healthy life.  If you have read any of the posts on this forum, you will see that most of the people here are dealing with addiction to drugs, percocets, oxycotin, morphine and vicoden. And some of us are dealing with spouses and loved ones who are addicts. Everyone here is extremely compassionate and caring for their fellow humans. You will not find a better group of people that God created anywhere, like you will here. You will always be welcomed, whether to post or if you have a response. Any outside opinion or advice is always welcome. Good Luck to you....Susan Lea

You're a sweetie Susan, always there to help and give advice.
I am so sorry to hear about your parents, that must have been very difficult to loose both of them at such an early age of their lives.
I hope you are doing well.  Keep being strong, you've made the best decision of your life, and never look back.
Keep 'living' on for you and your children.
You're in my prayers!

Congratulations! Thirty is definitely *not* too late. I'm no doctor, but I'll pass on what my doctor told me -- 10 years after quitting, your lungs are exactly as if you'd never smoked at all. And of course you're constantly healing & strengthening yourself with each passing day. I've seen how hard it has been for friends who have tried to quit, so good work!

I'm not addicted to any prescribed or illegal drugs, but just doing basic research and stumbled upon this web site. I have always been a concerned friend for people who need support and love to fight different addictions. I commend everyone trying to kick their addictions and think this is the best place to go for help. I've read a lot on this forum and i'm impressed with the heartfelt advice from moms helping their kids to people trying to help themselves. I will recommend this sites to anyone who needs a helping hand at recovery. May GOD be with all of you trying to triumph over their problems.
