Darvon to combat withdrawl(withdrawal)

Hi,

I am a member of Narcotics Anonymous for the last 2yrs. because I'm an addict. I got into the rooms because of prescription narcotics. I have had 7 low back surgeries and from time-to-time find it necessary to take Oxycodone or Oxycontin. My Dr. is very familiar with my situation, and his wife is in recovery for the same thing, so he has a tremendous working knowledge of recovery and pain. Because I am very prone to addiction (physical) and can suffer withdrawls after a very short time on meds taken as prescribed. I have found that tapering doses of Darvon (65mg) is extremly helpful for virtually eliminating my withdrawls. I fortunatly have never been tempted to abuse the Darvon (yet?). How do you feel about this? I was told by a Dr. once that this was a procedure reccomended by addiction specialists. Is this true?

Darvon is a very addictive drug.  I started taking Darvon in 1957
when it first came on the market.  My doctor prescribed it for
migraine headaches.  I was told that it was non-addictive and
would be very helpful for my situation.  I was given prescriptions for 10 years and I took 6 a day for 10 years.  Of course I got high, but I wouldn't admit it.  The doctor died and I saw a new doctor who said I would have to stop taking darvon.
I said okay, but three days later I was a nervous wreck -- pouring coffee onto the table instead of the cup, etc.  I called the doctor and he told me to come right into his office.  He said he would help to wean me off the darvon.   I started with 4 a day for 10 days, 3 a day for 10 days, 2 for 10 days, 1 for 10 days and then one every other day for a week and then none.  PLEASE, be very careful taking Darvon.  I have had several slip-ups over the years and have gone back to it, but AA or NA have helped me
get back on track.  I am 65 years old now, and started taking
Darvon 42 years ago, and I still crave it, even though I am not
taking it now when I could really use it for back pain.  It is
not a harmless drug, believe me.  I hope I have put the fear of God into you, as I wish someone had done that for me.  Good luck.

how long does darvocet stay in your system.....because....i know there can be "physical" withdrawls.....but once the medicine is out of your system.....the rest is mental withdrawl (withdrawal)

I am currently taking 20 to 30 mg. of methadone daily for chronic back pain. I was on methadone as an addict in the 1980's and I know what addiction is all about. My husband wants me off the meth for good. He has no idea what kind of pain I live with ea. day but I do agree I would like to find an alternative instead of methadone. Darvon seems to help the pain more. Can I wean myself off of the methadone using darvon instead? I will have to take something for my back pain. I have also heard of a non-addictive pain releiver. I can't remember the name, something like ulsam??? What alternative do I have and how can I get comepletely off Meth without severe withdrawals? Thank you for your prompt answer. Bobbie...

i have gone cold turkey off subutex for 3 weeks now.  still in bad shape.
does anyone know how long this gross withdrawl (withdrawal) will go on?  things seem to get worse with each passing day not better.  i used subutex to get off vicodin.  i did not know or was told that subutex and its cousin are opiates.  no laughing matter !  i notice people discuss their withdrawls but do not tell how long it will go on. subutex=opiate.  jr

Sub is right up there with Heroin and methadone for the bad withdrawals. It can last weeks. suboxone.com or naatb.org are good resource sites.

What do you take for chronic pain if you can't take NSAIDS (Ibuprofen) etc. Heat helps some, but tylenol doesn't work anymore.  Have been on Fentanyl patches for pain and went thru withdrawal after almost killing myself driving, falling asleep.  I have rheumatoid arthritis.
Recently have had a bad bout of this along with some surgery and was put on oxycodone. Stopped taking it a few days ago-sweating, anxious,.and extreme fatigue-fatigue being the worst of it.

I can't take NSAID's either.  Have you seen a Rheumatologist?  They may have something that can help.

I'm considering being tested to see if there is any anti-inflammatory I can take.  I know some allergists can test for this.

Right now I'm on Neurontin  and it is helping with my back pain.
