Well, it's the beginning of day 9 cold turkey, and each day seems to get a little better, but I'm not thru the woods yet. I've read everything you've posted, and really appreciate your input.
I'm trying to get a referral to a doc who uses traction that's supposed to last up to 2 weeks - hope that works. Also going to try some feverfew and and found that I was dehydrated so have been drinking plenty of water. And Petro.. I've tried keeping a journal before, and could find nothing specific that caused headaches... just seem random. However, I HAVE found that the headaches weren't continual as I thought, so I was taking far more narcotics than I actually needed.
This is just the start of the day when I seem to have the most energy. It seems to quickly drain away. What do you guys do to keep from feeling like total zombies?
I love to hear from you, believe me!
Wow! This site is a blessing. Just knowing there are others out there going through what I'm going through. I'm on day #12 and at times I still want to come out of my own skin. It comes in peaks and valleys. One thing I noticed (a little gross, I apologize) is that my stool is not quite as black and I'm going much less. Trying to keep it simple and meet my daily needs including the hygiene aspect of things. To all those like me, keep it up! We're off the train & need to keep trucking!!!
Also, kathy did you start and keep that journal about what your eating, or is there environmental issues like cleaners or smoke around that might be contributing to the headaches? Sometimes the answers are so simple,,,,, when you find them.
I hear you loud and clear on the novacaine, I've thought the same thing, only in my spine which they do do. I've had a bunch of the steroid injections and on the front end of the needle they have novacaine, it works good for a while. One of the bone crunchers I went to did give me a scrip for a powerful topical analgesic. [ rub on sinks in] also remember dmso? The topical stuff was old school and had to be mixed by the pharmacist, if you ask your doc, they will probably have some knowledge about it or about who would. If it weren't for the pain I'd have no reason to take oxy. Good luck. Are you staying hydrated? Is your body low on salt? Both those give me headaches.
for me, and it may sound strange, feverfew will give me relief from even the most severe headaches. i grow it, and so eat it right off the plant. it is available almost anywhere though. grocery stores, pharmacies or walmart, etc.
i have a prescription for Maxalt, a migraine medication which is amazing! unfortuately it is quite expensive and my insurance will no longer pay for it. you take one of those and within 20 minutes you will be awe stricken. i don't know too much about head injuries but i think it's worth a try. good luck, sway
congrats on day 7, hun. so sorry about the headaches, they sound like legitimate pain and you need to see a pain specialist, but PLEASE don't take any narcotic meds or all the blood sweat tnd tears of these last seven days will have been for nothing. my prayers are with you hun. Lucy
I feel a little bit better today, so far at least (except for the constant sneezing, lol). So things are looking a little brighter.
I went to the hospital ER in an ambulance last nite due to having shortness of breath and difficulty breathing and a horrendous headache.
Well after waiting in their lobby more than 4 hours I felt quite a bit better and just decided to come home. I know if I'd have stayed, they would very likely have offered me a couple of percocet, and I'm to weak to have wanted to turn them down, and there would go all my progress.
I've got to find an alternative... like , aw heck, I don't know, maybe novocaine shots in the neck or something
Thanks for your support.
Our mind is a very powerful thing. Hopefully you will find that your headaches lessen now that you are off the narcotics. Keep us posted on how you are feeling~~~~sara
Thanks for your responses! Too true about going back on narcotics, I'd just be starting the same cycle, and with my history, I'd probably need higher dosages sooner than before.
As for the headaches, they're not migraine; they stem from a car injury where I suffered traumatic brain injury, and the muscles and tendons in the back of my neck were messed up. I also had damage to my left eye and have a metal plate under the skin to keep my eye socket in place.
I agree, I need to find a pain doctor that might have some kind of non-narcotic treatment available. The problem is, that I've tried so many different things throughout the years and nothing seemed to work. Maybe something else WILL work if I tell myself that I can't have any more narcotics.
Thanks to all of you!
OH, and congrats on 7 days!!! : D
Hey Kathy. Any pain pill will quit working at a low dose after a while of using it. It's sad but true! I'm sorry about your headaches, but have you talked to your doc about a migraine medicine that is not habit forming? He might have some ideas, but my suggestion is not to take an opiate because of rebound pain associated with them.
I would think you would start feeling better soon. Usually after we stop our pain meds our pain seems to get worse and then all of a sudden it gets better and most of us have found that OTC meds work. As for getting another pain med at a lower dose? You would be playing with fire again. Your tolerance would go back up and so would your dose. Give yourself some more time to see if you feel better. It takes some time to get our minds rewired and right now i am sure all you can think about is taking something for this. I know it is tough but you are doing so good. 7 days is great!!!!!! sara
They did give me a topical gel called Zoltran that helped a bit. After I told them it helped, they ended up giving me something from a special pharmacy that makes compounding creams and gels. It contains things like lidocaine, ketamine, and other things that don't affect you systemically because it's topical. (I don't know all that is in it. I do know ketamine is usually given intravenously.)
I've been going through this pain for 3 years, starting with a surgery for a joint replacement. The artificial joint was recalled and had to be taken out; as a result they needed to use tendons from my arm. That failed, blah, blah, blah, more surgeries, PT, procedures, and nothing really works enough or long enough.
I've also had cortisone injections. Some worked temporarily; some not at all. Lately they've been doing a series of injections called stellate ganglion blocks. THey're performed by an anesthesiologist under flouroscopy.
I think a pain clinic is a good source, but I think you need to keep at it to find what works for you. I'm still searching. I've asked about alternative treatments. They're going to set me up with a pain psychiatrist, who is supposed to help me for looking at other treatments such as acupuncture and other non-medicinal ways to treat pain.
Good luck. Sounds like you've been through the ringer. You've done great getting off the meds.
