Demerol

by ggin35, May 22, 2007 12:00AM
I have a slipped disc in my back and I was in a lot of pain at my sisters wedding. I wanted to be a little more upbeat so I took something for the pain. I know I shouldn't have but I just wanted to be able to be social. Her new husband gave me ultracet and demerol. One each. I knew what ultracet would do so I took that during the wedding and everything was fine. I took the demerol at night. It knocked me on my butt!! I thought I had a high tolerance for everything! I still feel wierd from it and it's been a few days! Has anyone ever experienced this?

Well the ultracet is just ultram with tylenol so like you said, you knew what it would do but no matter how high a tolerance you have to opiates, 9 times out of ten demerol is going to "knock you on your butt." The chemical action of pethidine, meperidine (demerol) is even more complex than other opiates. You might be feeling bad though b/c demerol does the opposite of what many opiates do which is block certain ion calcium channels decreasing dopamine and norepinrphrine and may have similar effects on serotonin. This should correct itself soon. Demerol also has other side effects due to its very unique toxicity like seizures, delirium, and some other neuropsychological effects but these are very rare. It sounds to me that you are feeling low due to a lack of dopamine, norepinephrine, and possible serotonin. An ultram could help correct this as it increases serotonin and norepinehrine. If this worried you, you should always talk to your doctor.

I don't have any more Demerol and I don't think I would take it again even if I did. It makes me feel horrible!

well that's good, it is terribly addictive but no more effective in relieveing pain than morphine as it was once thought to be in the early 80's, but what I was saying is that taking an ultracet (ultram w/tylenol) might hel you feel right again because it increases serotonin and norepinephrine which demerol decreases through blockage of an ion calcium channel.

I don't have an ultracet either. I am starting to feel a little more normal now though. I think I'll be ok by tomorrow. Hope you are well!! XOXOXO
