Detoxing from Dilaudid and pain meds

I just finished detoxing from suboxone 2 weeks ago and was involved in a motorcycle accident that left me with a shattered collarbone, shoulder blade and several broken ribs.  I was taken to the hospital's trauma unit and received surgery for my collarbone injury.  They also gave me dilaudid for pain.  The pain is excruciating without it.  How long should I be on pain meds.  I can't believe I need to detox all over again.  Please  help me manage this process.  I know I need the pain medication but want to get off asap  and with limited withdrawal symptoms. Thank you.

One thing I will add is to continue as you are able to do the things that help.

When I am on pills, all I become is a consumer of the pills.

I no longer eat healthy, don't exercise, no vitamins, don't drink enough water, hide in my secrets, lie, etc....

I think if you do take these as prescribed and keep up all other healthy behaviors (as you are able with your injury) you will be in a much better position to get through this... use us on MH and keep posting.

Speedy recovery!

First things first. As Vicki suggested, you need to manage that kind of pain with the meds, as prescribed. I'm sorry that you've ended up in this predicament right now, but I see you as a classic example of why doctors need to prescribe pain medication. Follow the directions, stay on top of things trusting your doctor at the helm and you'll be okay. When the time comes to stop, again as Vicki suggests, taper down to avoid bad withdrawal symptoms. Eventually, when your healing is complete, you're going to be all right. Stay with us on here. You'll read many successful stories of recovery which will lift your spirits and give you hope as you recover from all of this. I wish you the best.

Hi- You should take the pain med when the pain is as you describe. And I know how painful it is...Take the meds as directed only.

It's hard to avoid dependence but when you keep the dose low and take it for as brief a time as possible, it will be better for you in the long run. Also, try to taper off instead of stopping abruptly.
