Deviated Septum from cocaine use?

Is it possible to get a deviated septum after only 2 months of cocaine use? When i blow my nose, it hurts and then a piece of skin will come out. What should i do about this? (Yes, i realize stop doing cocaine is the best thing. Spare me those comments.)

In my stupid youth (21-30) I used cocaine about 5 nights a week, no less than 12-14 lines a night while facilitating the use in clubs for other users. I had maybe 9 occasions where I felt a lot of pain the next morning and this was due to cutting agents mainly.   I discontinued use 5 years ago and aside some nosebleeds there was never any lasting damage to my septum. I do not recommend you ever do it or push those type of limits but in all honesty, unless you are doing balls of cocaine a few times a week then you should be ok, at least in that department. Remember, though, it's not something you should ever do in the first place.

I'm not going to tell you to stop using cocaine.

I will tell you that tonight at an AA meeting, the guest speaker talked about his cocaine use.

It wasn't pretty.  He wasn't even using all that long.  Maybe just a few years.

One day he blew his nose.  Of course there was a lot of blood.  Guess what else came out?  Yup...  His septum.  It just came out when he blew his nose.

He's still alive.  And well.  And sober (five years sober today!  Well actually five years and one day as I write this.)  But he no longer has a septum.

I'm not telling you to stop.  But sooner or later -- you will stop.  It's just up to you how much you're willing to lose before you do.

After the meeting tonight, I've been picturing what it must have actually been like -- that's why I did a google search for "blew nose septum came out" and this article with your question in it is the first thing.  So since your question is in front of me, I felt the need to share his story with you.

Avis you are right i think, I always say deviated, but i guess it's called perforated. Ok so i have a perforated septum, that sounds much better. I think it took about 4 years for this to happen to me and yes, a lot of money in blow, yuck.

I hope you take our advice and stop now. good luck to ya

Gizzy I have heard of cocaine causing a perforated Septem but not a deviated septums tend to be there at birth or happen from some type of trauma like breaking your nose .I may be wrong (it would not be the first time LOL) but that's what I had been told.

septal perforation is a hole in the nasal septum.  It can occur as a result of previous nasal surgery, or as a result of a nasal fracture, and there are many more causes as well.  A septal perforation is often thought of as resulting from cocaine use, but it takes a lot of money worth of cocaine to cause a hole in the septum, and trauma or previous surgery are much more common causes.

Cocaine does cause a deviated septum, but after 2 months use, it would be rare, very very rare. The skin coming out is not from your septum, just tissue the coke is eating away. This is normal for any coke user and in all honesty nothing to worry about. If you do not stop using the cocaine will continue to eat away at the skin and bone in your nose, but this may be the smallest problem you have to worry about with coke use. Your heart will give out first, it eats away at your brain, can cause a stoke heart attack and lots of other fun stuff. I was a heavy coke user and this little pain in your nose and scabs in nothing compared what awaits u if you don't stop. Not trying to scare you, but at 2 months use, stopping wont' be to hard, soon you won't be able to stop. Good luck to you and again, your fine the sore nose and scabs are normal after using coke.

I have no experience medically and I'm new here so you can choose to read this or not, but... That happened to my husband during his experience with cocaine. After it ate away his nose and caused him to have a seizure he found out from the ER that there was more in it than what's "normally" in it. Not that any type of street drug has a "normal". But still, his nose kept doing that for a couple months even after he stopped. So... yes as you thought stopping would prob. be your best bet if you want it to stop. Otherwise... just accept it as one of the consequences. Good Luck!
