I was prescribed Clonidine for my Fentanyl patch WD symptoms.  I think it helped me a little through the first symptoms, but it was a painfull process.  I don't think you can ever take all the pain out of WD; it is inevitable.  I was told to take it at night, but found it was actually keeping me awake.  One of the side effects is insomnia, which is one of the last things I need, so I stopped taking it after a couple of weeks.

Sorry, I didn't answer your questions about "how" it helps.  This is what WebMD says about it:  Clonidine is a blood pressure medicine that acts on the brain. Clonidine reduces the effects of the "fight or flight" response, which is over-activated during opioid withdrawal. However, clonidine does nothing to reduce drug craving, and is mostly ineffective when used alone.

clonidine helped me immensely when i was withdrawaling from methadone and benzos.it takes away the heart pounding as it is a b/p med.it also helped me to get some sleep and take away alot of the anxiety,it has a calming effect.as worried878 said you must be careful.when i was in rehab they would take your b/p before handing out meds.if yours was to low they would't give you your dose.some people in there would jog in place in their rooms once the nurse called out med. time just to bring their b/p up and be able to get their clonidine
