Drug Screen Info Requested - Can You Help

by LostFree, Aug 24, 2002 12:00AM
I was recently drug screened and tested posotive for barb's.  Now 2 1/2 weeks ago I was given Phenobarbital during a hospital stay, is there a chance that this is still in my system?  My employers are wanting to fire me thinking I'm lying when I know for a fact, I have taken nothing with the exception of Kava Kava, that's it !  Your comments are appreciated.  Do you know of any other med's that might show up as barb's that I might want to look back on to double check as well?

If you have proof of a doctors consent to take the med's for a ligit reason. Than the employer usually can do nothing at all, On the other hand. If your employer has had a "issue" w/ you popping positive repeatedly for opiates, barbs, or benzodiazepams even w/ consent with a doctor. They very well could have an insurance issue there. Not wanting a someone on meds that could make production suffer or like I said the might think that you could get hurt if your judgement is "clouded" Just somthing to think about.

If you are taking a regular **** test, then most drugs (except marijuana, which is stored in your fat cells and is present in urine for approximately 4 - 6 weeks) are out of your system within a few days, so you should have no problem with passing your **** test.  But I agree with xandyk that you should be able to pass the text even if your **** is dirty with legitimately prescribed drugs.  Your job sounds like a real pain in the ass to me--hope you're making lots of money!  LOL!~

Well I found out the half life of a barb is 96 hours and it can stay in a drug screen for up to 5 - 7 weeks after, so I'm cleared, now if they decide to get rid of me, I see a wrongful termination in the future :)

Not sure if this will help, but try this link:

You might need to check a few different pages, but this is an company that DOES the drug screens.

Good luck

If you company gives you a standard, inexpensive drug screen, most drugs won't show up in your system after a week.  If they use an expensive test--it is harder to clear (you can buy kits at health food stores that PH your urine so you can't see the drugs) and you it is more comprehensive.

However, you took the pheno for legit reasons and drug screens can be wrong.  Do you remember in the 1980's when Ronald Regan took a drug test when he was President?  Well, it cam back testing positive for heroin!!  It was learned that he had eaten poppy seed cake--which can show up as a dirty for heroin.

If you took the drug for a legit reason, your employer is powerless to get rid of you.  Marijuana generally stays in your system anywhere from 1 to 5 days for someone who smokes once in a blue moon.  Chronic users can test positive for up to 45 days.  Most people will be clean in a week.  Remember, the 45 days is an extreme case......the longest ever found.  Even for marijuana to be in your system for a month is a stretch.

Drugs OF ABUSE LEVEL OF USAGE TIME PERIOD
Marijuana (Cannabis)
  Single use 3-5 days
Moderate use (3 times per week) 8-12 days
  Heavy use (daily) 21-30+ days
Cocaine Any level of use 2-3 days
Opiates Any level of use 2 days
PCP (Phencyclidine) Any level of use 3 - 8 days
AMP's (Amphetamines) Any level of use 2 - 4 days
Ecstasy Any level of use 3 - 5 days

I got this from the NIH (National Institute of Health).  Just to clear up how long drugs stay in your system.

That is generally right, but I have seen different times depending on the chart you are looking at.  It also depends on the method they use to test you (what type of test they use to test your urine).
