I was just reading your post about "Fun Facts". I had to chuckle a bit about the Heroin thing.
In 2002, I was laid off of a job that I really loved and made very good money. I was heart-broken. I had no idea what I was going to do. I learned of a progrm called WIA that sent laid-off workers back to school. I was estatic! I got in to the program and started my first semester of a medical transcription degree. At the age of 27, I was still very naive to things, especially school. I decided after that semester I wasn't capable of typing fast enough to transcribe even though I was sitting at a 4.0 average on a six class, 18 credit hour semester. I then switched to Nuclear Medicine. I took all of my general classes so WHEN I was accepted into the program, I could only concentrate (stress) the core classes. There was a 3 year waiting period to get in as it was 1 out of 3 schools that offered it within the state of NC. As part of the general classes, I had to take Chemistry. Note, I haven't ever taken this class not even in high school and it had been 10 years since I had taken a math class. I didn't realize the it was mainly math. I thought well hell, I am good at science.WOWWW! That class was tough but probably one of the most fun and I learned so much. I was in class on Mon, Wed and Fri and was in lab on Wed evening. My professor tried so hard to get most of the class to drop. All med students were told by him that they didn't need this chemistry as it was an advanced class. But due to me working with radioactive isotopes, he found out that I would need it. When I wasn't in class, I was with my tutor. I was the oldest and the only one that took the class seriously. Well, my professor seen I was the only one who done the required prework to all of the labs and knew I was in tutoring as well as my tutor was one of his prize pupils. So, I think that all of these factors led him to be a bit more lenient in the grades he gave me. Our exams would have like 4 questions on them and were very difficult. BUT, he would give partial credit. BONUS!!! I was transferring schools so I had to have at least a C to transfer and that is what I got. I earned an A but that isn't to say that is what my grade was. So I think he gave me the A and the D-E I actually got and came up with an average. I did pull of a C!!!!
I can't help to think that it was because of my last lab's oral presntation. Every one elses were very humdrum and they didn't even have much. They just made stuff up and winged it. I had one ready though. I had done a lot of research and came to class ready to tell him what I had learned.
Our last lab was turning Salicylic acid using acetic anhydride as the catalyst to make aspirin. I come bopping in and gave the whole class the full recipe of how to make heroin using the same concepts and a little morphine. My professor looked up and told me not to be giving my classmates any ideas and told me that he didn't know where or how I done my research, but from now on he wanted to be my lab partner! I really think that is what made him decide to give me the transfer grade!
