J.C., why don't you want a 12 step program? I am a recovering Alcoholic myself and the 12 step program has worked for me for the past 8 1/2 years, I would recomend giving it a chance, it has worked for a couple of million of us so far. good luck ,Ed.

I've been sober for 21 years and the Excutive Director for Victor House, a 12 Step Program for men in recovery in Anahiem, CA.  We've been here since 1988, and have had over 1200 alumni.

So many lives have changed because of AA, and Victor House.  I'm a believer and I practice what I preach so to speak.  It does work, if you want it.

i have also been looking for a non-12 step program... treatment centers are hard to find... individual therapists much easier... read stanton peele's addiction website...

12 steps does not reach everyones heart... if sobriety is the goal, how you get there should never be the issue... everyone finds their own way...

women for sobriety is also a good alternative for support group...

The problem of drug addiction is seen mostly in urban regions. People in cities live a stressful life. They make drugs as a medium for getting relief from all the pain and stress. But they become drug addicted after some time of drug use and find itself in big trouble.

You need the 12 step program!!  Trying to do it without the support of other addicts is foolish indeed.  Narcotics Annonymous is an excellent program and almost all treatment centers use the 12 steps.  There are simply little or no recoveries from people doing it on their own.  Now if your a born again Christian, there are religious groups and programs that use Jesus and The Bible.  But the idea of AA, NA,  CA, etc came from the idea that people DONT HAVE to use religion alone as a step to recover.  But if you dont want religion, spirituality, or the 12 steps, than it sounds like you dont want to recover.  The very guidelines to admitting you have a problem and recovering are dealt with in great detail and perfection in these 12 step programs.  The real root of addiction is not just quitting, it's the human experience and dealing with it.  That's what the 12 steps are all about.  Anyone can quit (and probably wont stay quit), but it's a whole different story to RECOVER!  Recovering keeps you quit one day at a time for the rest of your life.

I wanted to bump this back up top so you will hopefully get this - I really like your thinking about non 12-step programs and wanted to forward a book for you to think about getting -- "The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure", by Chris Prentiss.  You'll be able to find it in any book store or online.  In the book, he has a really good reference area for finding what you're looking for, so there's that.  More importantly, I believe, is what his book lays out regarding the alternitive to 12-step programs.  Definitely worth the read (or at least a google to see what it's about), and the book was a big catalyst for my beginning to look at addiction in a different light .... check it out .. good luck and God Bless ..

most tx facilities are 12 step or christian
if you do not want to go into 12step tx you will need to contact some of your local churches
NA is for those of us who have already tried , medicine, religion and psychiatry
i work at an alcohol and drug rehab, 40 patients come through every 3 weeks, i have not seen one person yet who has made it without aa or na
goodluck to you

Well I work at a non-12-step center in Thailand for English speaking people, we use CBT as a model and it is very successful.  It is in use much more in Europe then in America.

Mtgoat, I would not agree with your statement about nobody getting better without AA or NA, I know many people who use to be drug or alcohol users that the 12-step approach didn’t work for.  Myself included, 10 years drug free after a CBT program.

Different approaches work for different people, I have many friends that used a 12-step model successfully and I have many that it didn’t work for and used an alternative.  Totally depends on the person.

Anyways if anyone is interested the center I work for is Channah Thailand.  We accept people from all over the world so long as they speak English and the program is tailored to your needs.  You can find more information at www.****.***

All Rehab has a very high failure rate and the insistance that everyone get into a 12 step program fertilizes this failure.  Some people don't believe the spiritual aspect and having the 12 steps shoved down their throat is just another building block to failure.  Like most Christian based initiatives it's our way or "you don't want it" "something is wrong with yoU".  Something is wrong but it has nothing to do with believing in gates of gold or a "higher power" it is a learned behavior that is very earthly and needs to be unlearned in a very earthly way.  Not everyone drinks the coolaid and there are options available for them as well.  More power to you if you can wrap yourself around the air but not everyone can and no one should insist that they "try a 12 step program".  Everyone I know has "tried a 12 step program" and yes before you judgemental christians say it they REALLY TRIED a 12 step program and it was like you trying to go to a satanic ritual and find your solutions.  It just isn't there for them and people like you push them away from even trying to get any other form of help.  Solve yourself and quit insisting that your cookie cutter approach can fix everyone if they just "BELIEVE".
