Food while detox?

I plan to quit a 160mg a day Oxycontin addiction once and for all during the Memorial week.  I'm getting everything prepared and even booked a descent 4 star hotel for 6 nights through priceline at an awesome price.  My question is, what type of food is recommended during withdrawal? I've read that I should stay away from processed foods and solid foods.  I planned to take some top ramen with me but I guess that's out of the question?  Could anyone suggest some specific types of food?  Thanks.

I agree.. its the worst. Been 6 days.. I've started to eat and such.. but the smells still there.. I took two showers today, and washed my face probably 5 times.. My fiance says to relax I can't wash it off.. He's probably right.  After going through this so many times you'd think I'd be used to it by now.  I think the difference this time is.. I WANT this to be the last time.. Not, I know it is until next month when the new script comes in.  I was just talking to a friend of mine, telling her all the symptoms feel so obvious to me.. I can't really explain it.. Like, I am embracing it, because this will be the last time.. and I want to remember the pain, depression and the god awful smells.. so I can use it as a reminder.

The hotel sound like a fantastic idea to me.  I wish I could do that, I might not of had to go the sub route.  I hate everything when I'm detoxing and don't want to see anyone.  I want to be alone and away from everyone.  I turn into such a mean person that I would rather not be mean to people who care.  Have to many things going on to do it thou, wish I could.  I have a good feeling you are going to do just fine with this and make it through.  Best wishes.

Mastema: man I know exactly what you are talking about with that taste and the SMELL!!!! ahhhhhh I HATE that damn smell! Other people on here have talked about it. I can smell it on me, all over me but my wife says she does not. And my mouth taste terrible! The smell is like a mild sweet/sour/sweaty smell and it makes me crazy! It's not like B.O. or anything or like just sweat the only time i ever smell it is during detoxing. It's just weird and i hate it.

Withdrawal seems to be really different for everyone, so just take it moment by moment - you'll get through it and the physical stuff should be mostly behind you by the time you get home.  I think it's great that you're preparing so well.  If you feel vulnerable, come here and write and there's always someone around.  We'll be rooting for you - you can DO this!!  p.s. oh yeah, cool sounding apps by the way.

I'm on the sensitive end as well.  I've gone into severe withdrawals twice, though I'm a pain management patient.  First time I had no idea.  My scripts were late in the mail but I just figured I'd be in pain.  I actually got into a hot tub but couldn't get myself out and had to call my sister for help.  It was in hindsight when I realized it was really withdrawal.

Second time was last week.  I've been tapering down, got a bit cocky and cut the dose a bit and then wound up with a stomach bug from my kids.  Wound up in the ER (and did not have a great experience.)  Now I'm in and out of mild to moderate withdrawal and waiting to see my doctor in the morning to come up with a better plan.

Everyone is different.  I love the hotel idea and wish I could do it but I have 4 kids and can't leave them.  And I wish I had REALLY cleaned and caught up on laundry, meals, etc. before I got to where I am.

At the worst of it for me, I could keep nothing down at all ... not even sips of water.  The doctor recommended trying one sip every 15 minutes of Gatorade and clear liquids.  Popsicles have helped.  If you have a fridge in your room, you can stock it full of things like jello, pudding, drinks.  Having a maid come in to change the sheets will be awesome ... I had hot sweats/cold sweats.  Just hard to get comfortable.

But I do think I'm extreme.  I've always been sensitive to medications, foods, and I have several underlying health issues so I think the withdrawal seems magnified to me.  (And I have to admit I feel like a huge sissy when I read about people on here who do the CT with way more on their plate than I have.)

Best of luck.  Hope it goes well.

I am now 4 days in.. and on the first day I needed clean *****.. it took all I had in me to crawl outta bed, put the sheets in the was and take a hot shower.
A friend recommended apple sauce to me.. and its really all I've been able to eat.  I know they say stay away from sugar... but chocolate has always helped me.
Also, I don't know if anyone else gets this.. but during detox, and w/d I always have this horrible taste in my mouth. (I doubt it is.. my fiance who doesn't use, says he can smell it on my skin..) Anyway.. I recommend mouth wash.. gum.. anything to help with the taste in your mouth.
I wish you all the best. Remember, it gets better everyday, and your not going to die. Even though its going to feel like it. If you need anything ANYTHING inbox me or make another post.. Reach out..

Yeah I hope you do well also. Not trying to scare you, I did the whole being prepared thing too but for me it never panned out. I could only just move from the bathroom to the bed and repeat. I do think I am on the upper end of the sensitive side of people who go through this. There are some of us that it just debilitates 100% and some that work while detoxing. People say get into the tub for a hot bath, I could not even do that. I could not do my apps or even watch TV. I hated EVERYTHING.  It was unimaginable hell. You would think that would be enough to keep me away but nope. That's the even harder part. Just stay positive when it gets deep. Just know that it will pass. Like i said mine took like a month, two weeks of hell and two bad. Then the week i start feeling better I got a kidney stone and went back. Never as bad as 160mg a day like before but still.

I will be checking on your progress and I wish you the best. I think to do this you have to really want it and you seem to by your preparation.

My money's on you.

Take care,

No, I totally agree. I don't know how this will play out. I fear of the possibilty of being homesick or paranoid in a hotel, or just plain freaking out for whatever reason. Luckily, the hotel is blocks away from home so I can always go back or at least know in my mind that I'm not far away so we'll see how it goes.

IMDone, that is a fantastic suggestion! The house could use some extra tidying up before I leave, that way there's no worries or feeling irrated when I get back. Thanks everyone and I'll keep you posted.

By the way, I got two cool little apps for my phone.  One app is to create checklists in which I made a list for what supplies I would need and another list that checks off all the things that need to be done at work and home before I leave.  The other App is a cool journal that timestamps each entry and I can include photos and my mood, progress, etc.

Maybe for men a nice hotel is a good way to go but I always find comfort in my own bed. I'm the kind of person that gets homesick when I go into the next county. It seems like you have planned for every possible thing. I hate to be the negative one but sometimes people may need real medical attention because of other medical issues. So you may want to keep your dr's number handy.

Yes - soup is a great idea.  You probably won't be very hungry during those first few days, so soup is always easy to take and easy on the system.

And just one other suggestion - you might want to clean up just a little (even if it's only for the ILLUSION of clean!!  lol) before you leave.  That way you won't have to come home to a messy house.  I always clean my house before I go on vacation because I know I'm going to be kind of down about the vaca ending and to come home to a dirty house would set me off.  Just an idea.....

But most importantly, CONGRATS to you for doing this.  Feel really good about that and don't lose sight of this accomplishment.  :)

Thank you all for your support. Well I don't want to seem like a guy who splurges, but the hotel seemed more practical. I needed a place with a clean bath, be somewhere where I won't be annoyed with seeing things around the house that needs to get done, etc. Plus there's a workout gym, indoor pool and steam room, for exercise.

As far as price, I started low on priceline and ended with a bid at $52 a night which totalled at about $300 for 6 nights 7 days. Not bad for a 4 star hotel. Now coincidentally, I was paying around $300 a week anyway on pills off the street so I now see this as the '$300 a week to end ALL $300 a weeks'

My wife and kids will be out of town until July because school ends early.  I'm only using 4 days of vacation hours from work to give me the entire week to get well. I have my sister and a some friends from work (who don't use) to support me and will keep me company from time to time. I'm so prepared, it's not even funny.  I'm bringing my guitar, lots of books, a subscription to
Netflix on my laptop and a load of vitamins listed on the Thomas recipe, Amino protocol and other vitamins not listed but would keep me nutritioned along the way.

So would canned chicken noodle soup do?  I might have to just eat out and find a place that doesnt serve fast food. Would Subway sandwiches be ok? I bought a case of Boost nutritional drinks and thought I'd substitute those for a meal which I occasionaly do anyway.

Good luck with this and have someone around that you can be in touch with. I think going to the hotel is a great idea. You'll feel better mentally in lovely surroundings...

The most important thing is to stay hydrated.  Dehydration is common during detox and will make you feel worse!  So,have water, juices, and gatorade available and drink like crazy!!

For food:  It's true, you'll lose your appetite!!   But you need to eat to keep your blood sugar up!  Fruits are great and taste good!  Eat your oranges and bananas!  Also, you need to get some protein in so try protein bars, toast with peanut butter, soup, milk shakes,crackers,etc...
Good luck with this...and stay in touch!!

You might not want ANY food for about that long anyway. I would say if you CAN eat just eat what spuds GOOD, because chances are not much will sound good. I jumped off the exact same amount of OXY earlier in the year and it was the worse WD I have been through. OXY IMO is the freaking DEVIL. I have come off if percocet, vicodin and other stuff but that jump off from OXY was horrible. For me it was a good 30 days before I was feeling ok again. And not great at that. First two weeks were hell. First week was insane. But I am living proof it can be done. But don't expect it to be over right away. I only ate taco bell after like day 4 or 5. Before that it was just juice and like a half of a chocolate protien bar. Hopefully your time will be easier than mine. Everyone is different. I ran a low fever for like 2 1/2 weeks after also. I would just say eat what sounds good but don't eat a LOT at a time. I did that when I did get my appetite back and it just about put me in a coma lol. All of our systems are trying to fire back up and sometimes eating too much causes people to crash hard because it takes energy to digest and most of our energy is gone trying to heal our systems. Good luck next weekend.

I think that's a great idea.  Clean room, someone who will come in and change the sheets daily, room service if you need it.  (Probably a jacuzzi in the hotel somewhere!!)  The Thomas REcipe or the Amino Acid Protocol gives good suggestions on things that help detoxing be more comfortable.  Bananas are good for muscle cramps/restless legs.  Hydration is important.  Do you have anyone to be with you or stay in touch with???
