Getting off Hydros

Getting off Hydros

I am trying to get off Hydros. I take about 3/ 10mg a day. I have been taking them about a year and half. I am now out of pills and need to know that best way to help with the withdraw. I am extremely scared but so tired of taking these pills. It effects my everyday life and the future I want to have with my husband. I have tried this before and my legs hurt so bad. What can I do? What's the best way to do this on my own?? I don't want to be on these pills anymore please any advice will be great!!

Hi, I'm glad you found your way to the forum. To start with, you want to click the Health Page link at the upper right hand part of the page and get all the things you can for the Thomas Recipe and the amino acid protocol.
All people are different while going through withdrawals, but usually the nasty physical stuff lasts about one week. Days 3-5 tend to be the worst by general consensus. As we all have done/said it is like the worst flu you have ever had in your life. But it goes away, just like any other one.
Since these pills cause constipation, your GI is going to be quite upset and you will have severe diarreah (diarrhea). Immodium is a God send for this.
FLUIDS. It is very important to stay hydrated, gatorade, juices, water, drink as much as possible. I literally drank 1-2 gallons per day. You won't have much of an appetite, but protein shakes would help. Simple food, crackers, bread, light sandwiches, etc. You may not think you want to eat, but force something down. It's not easy, but some people actually get hungry once the food passes through the lips. I wasn't so lucky.
EXERCISE. I know you are going to want to lay there and not move, but any exercise will help, even if its just walking for 10 minutes around the house. Gets your endorphins going again (your brain has not been doing this, the opiates mask the "good feelings" they give you).
As far as your leg goes, if it is Restless Leg, Hylands makes a Pill called Restless Leg and it does help a lot.
OTC Alleve, etc is your best bet, if your stomach can handle them.
Vitamins: B and C are crucial. I haven't looked at the protocols in a while, but L-Tyrosine is also good, Niacin is well spoken of. Also a broad spectrum multi - like Centrum.
Your emotions will come rushing back, it is part of ridding yourself of the opiates. They have masked your feelings for a long time. It is natural to have some very strong emotions during this.
STAY BUSY. Even if its just watching useless TV, DVDs, whatever to keep your mind occupied so you don't think about pills. Music was my saviour, I went through 100s and 100s of CDs, just bury yourself in something that keeps your mind occupied.
Time. This takes time. It is your best friend and enemy right now. Concentrate on the NOW.
Sleep is usually the last to come back. You can try Melatonin (available at any drug store), it is a natural sleep aid and is not addicting. A lot of people use valium or xanax (myself included), but it is very easy to get addicted to. If you chose that route, use them sparingly and stop as soon as possible. Others speak of a sleepytime tea, you may want to try that.

That's about all I can think of. You're in for a few rough days, I won't lie to you. It's not pleasant, but the day you wake up and realize you don't "need" or even WANT a pill to start your day, makes the trip worth it.
Use the forum, post any questions, vent, whatever makes you happy. This place is wonderful and you will get great support.
I wish you the best, this is doable, you just have to want it. Don't be scared, this won't kill you. The fear of the unknown is always worse than the reality.
Best of luck.
Gary
