HELP I'M TERRIFIED-METHADONE!!

Hi all

As some of you will already know I am currently consuming a whopping dose of OxyContin (640mg/day) for the pain I experience on a daily basis.  My doctor informed me recently that it is high time I was taken off OxyContin in favour of something somewhat different, coupled with pretty much constant supervision from the local pain clinic.  Today whilst attending a Dr's appointment I was informed by him that the most likely rout that wil be taken with me to kick the Oxy will be Methadone.  I have heard so many terrible horror stories about Methadone (many from here) that I am now completely and utterly terrified at the prospect of taking such a drug.  Can somebody please please tell me what Methadone is actually like, what it is like to quit and any other information I should know before I even consider taking it.  I know that it is a heroine substitute often used to treat heroine addiction etc so I am aware that it has been widely used over a considerable length of time.  The very last thing I want to happen is for me to end up on a drug that is actually worse than OxyContin and a lot harder to come off!  I would really appreciate any help from you guys because I am absolutely terrified to be honest.

Thank you all so mmuch

God bless

Gixer

i have detoxed ct off 200mg a day methadon habit
this was worse then all other detoxes
i am comparing the wd's to other drugs i have detoxed from like oc's, herion, codiene

i suggest using a short acting opiate before you get on methadone

before all the tx centers turned to suboxone, they all used codiene, bentyle and clonidine to detox patients off long acting opiates
they did this because short acting opiates have a shorter period of PAWS

most people who use methadone to detox end up staying on the drug for years, and find that methadone is actually harder to quit then their original drug of choice

i wish you luck, i have been in your situation several time, i have not had to detox in almost 5 yrs, last summer (4yrs clean) i had to go through chemo and took ultram for the pain, i stayed on those for 3wks and man was it tough getting them out of my system

this is another resource that may help you make a descion, if your goal is to get clean, switching to a stonger pain med will just not help
your doc probably wants you on methadone because it makes him look better
fda monitors oc's much more than they do methadone

methadone has alot of side effects and is very hard to detox from..but so is 650 mg of oxy....it would be a better choice/methadone/ in my opinion over that high of a dose of oxy....it would even be a better choice to find alternative pain relief and perhaps let narcotics go..not sure of ur pain problem nor ur quality of life without narcotics...for most life is better without narcotics/ unless u r terminal..then it is not an issue if life is ending soon due to cancer etc...doses like that can make u terminal tho..cut years off ur life...u know ur situation and what u need....being a chronic pain patient myself.i chose to live life and dump the narcotics as it is neverending and very emotionally painful
