HELP!!! Side effects of pills

by emmy22, Nov 03, 2002 12:00AM
Hey guys. I have posted here a few times, and I got great responses and felt right at home. It is really neat that there are so many people to help. I have a question about side effects of pills... why do they make my heart palpitate sometimes??? I am a healthy, 22 year old girl, no health problems, no drinking, and I have been on Tylenol 3 for five years off and on. I do abuse it, and I am on day 5 for being clean, and with the help of God, my withdrawals have been very bearable, but I am worried about why the pills made my heart beat funny sometimes, about one hour after i took the pill, usually. The "funny" heartbeat goes away when the pill wares off. Has anyone experienced this??? please help. Thank you

High blood pressure and palpatations are symptoms of withdrawal. They will pass.

I am not a medical doctor but it sounds to me like you are having palpations and/or PVC's related to your medication. They are benign. If you are concerned, true pathology can be ruled out with an EKG or cardiac stress test.  If you are young a cardiac problem is very unlikely.

Has anyone heard from Sean. I wonder and hope that his story has a happy ending.

I get those too, but it is realted to a condition I have, MVP(mito-valve-prolapse). It effects me with any drug I take. It is a condition where your mitro valve dosen't close all the way. Your mitro valve is a main valve of your heart. This condition can be over exagerated, but in my case I could just drop dead someday. It is a common condition and in most people it has no threat. You can go to your doctor and request an EKG.This will tell you wether this is the cause. But please don't worry, it is very common and its not life threating.

Apology for busting thread.  Have a comment/question on tylenol and liver damage.   Taking pain meds on and off, and abusing them when need them, I was concerned with liver damage. Unfortunately I also like my beer which I know is a bad mix.  Anyway, in research I found the following:

The toxic liver reaction can be completely avoided if one were to take the supplement N-acetyl Cysteine or L-Glutlamine (usually about 500 mg one to three times per day). These amino acids are two of the rate-limiting components for the formation of glutathione. If one needs to take acetaminophen for any reason on a regular basis it would be wise to take these two supplements to limit liver damage.

Anyone know or have any knowledge on these amino acids.  I know they are in supplement stores.  Thomas, maybe you can give some insight?   Thanks all, Nod

(MickyC),

I also have Mitral Valve Prolapse. Ever since I started taking Klonopin, the palpitations have completely gone away. Drinking also makes them go away because withdrawal brings it out fast.

I don't drink anymore and I still take 8 mg of Klonopin a day for my seizures and anxiety and one of the benefits also is the lack of palpitations, and tackycardia.

(Enmmy22),

In the case of meds causing it, maybe the tylenol or Codiene is not for you. Many people get palpitations from Codiene, it's a listed side effect.

Hi there,
I too have Mitral Valve Prolapse.  When I was in my twenties I had a EEG and a EKG done.  They told me there was nothing to worry about and I could lead a normal life.  Aside from the Palps I have no problems.  What condition do you have with the prolapse that you could "drop dead"  Now you have me concerned that I need to go back to the cardiologist.

Thanks in advance for your reply

HOLD ON ,I am not trying to scare anybody! This condition is very common and there are only rare cases that are serious. Mine, according to the doctors, is one of the serious type. I have to take medication to regulate my heart. I've been doing this since I was about fourteen. This dosen't mean that you are at risk. Even if you were you would know it. Not just by taking drugs, but just everyday living. When I was a teenager my heart would start racing and it felt like it was in my throat for about fifteen minutes tops, and I would hperventalate. There are other symptoms to be aware of also, but you probably would know. Sorry about the confusion.

Take care, MickyC

To Starraven,

After I was diagnosed through EKG and Echocardiography I was told my skipping heart beat, was an arrythmia caused by MVP.

I purchased a medical book from the doctors library in Chicago about vavular heart disease that said only in extremely rare instances will a person with benign MVP have sudden death. It is caused by the skipping heartbeats going haywire, into the fast beating tackycadia and then atrial fibliration where the heart is vibrating but not really beating or pumping blood anymore thus death occurs.

The book also said it is so rare you are more likely to die in a plane crash or a meteor falling out of the sky on your head, or something to that effect. I was told not to worry. The pounding and skipping beats often became uncomfortable especially at night while trying to sleep. I took Beta Blockers over a decade ago for about one year. Those make you high by the way, so I stopped them because I felt too spaced out.

Now, by accident, after being placed on Klonopin four years ago for the seizures and anxiety, the palpitations are completely unnoticable and no discomfort with skipping beats.

I hope this eases your mind.

I think Chatahan explained things pretty well. Almost all cases of MVP are benign and not life treatening. However, one should still be checked by their doctor, preferably a cardiologist to see the extent of the MVP, as even in mild cases. where there is more than just a trace of leakage, it is EXTREMELY important to get antibiotic prophylaxis before dental work or certain surgical proceedures.

The reason for this is that a leaky mitral valve is at risk for infection by bacteria that can enter the bloodstream during dental work (even cleaning) and certain medical proceedures. The infection of the valve is referred to as endocarditis, an extremely serious illness which can cause permanent damamge to the valve and requires weeks of IV antibiotics for treatment. Anothr risk factor for endocarditis (even WITHOUT MVP) is IV drug abuse, which is almost never done with sterile conditions, and represents a well known health hazard for IV drug addicts.

The GOOD news is that if you have MVP, taking an appropriate antibiotic right before dental work or whatever proceedure (called antibiotic prophylaxis) willl reduce the risk to nil. That's why it's important if you are someone who needs prohylaxis or ont, and if you do, make sure ALL your treating docotors know about it and take the antibiotics you are given as directed.

MVP in all forms (most very insignificant) affect up to 10% of the population. It's a smaller number that need to be more concerned, and very few who have seriously "leaky" valves. So if there is any question in your past medical history, be sure you get straight answers from your doctors, and make sure to know if you are someone who should get antibiotic prophylaxis or not.

I'm away on business for a few days, but I'll be thinking of you all, and hoping everyone does well. See you all Friday.

Take care,
Sundown

Sundown,

Thank's for clarifying that, I forgot to add that important part. I have the mitral reguritation,(blood leaking back into then heart chamber) and was told always to get the anti-biotics before any dental proceedures due to the risk of life threatening heart infenction.

I wanted to thank all of you for all the insight and information on my Mitral Valve prolapse.  It prompted me to do a little more research of my own.  What I learned was that my heart palpitations were a symptom of withdrawal, I get them VERY rarely when I am not on the pain killers.  I also learned that those with MVP are more prone to anxiety and panic disorders (For me its panic attacks and generalized anxiety disorder and I'm tired all the time)  as well as fatigue and dizziness as well as abnormal beta receptors and gastroesophageal reflux just to name a few.
When I take the narcotics the anxiety, panic and fatigue subside.  My doctors know of the MVP and my anxiety disorders, but they never once mentioned the fact that it could be a result of the prolapse.

My dentist and oral surgeon are very careful though, they always have me take a handful of antibiotics an hour before having anything done and send me home with more.

Thanks again..
Oh..and P.S..I did a stupid thing and lifted my daughter (four years old), threw my back out and ended up back at my spinal surgeons office.  I have a new prescription for percodan and a medrol pack.  I'm 35 days clean and this happens.  I haven't filled the prescription except for the medrol pack.  My husband wants me to fill it because he sees the pain I am in and says he will monitor them, but I just can't do it.  He says I'm being an idiot for being so stubborn.  I'll see if the medrol pack helps and will continue to take the advil by the handful.  but if worse comes to worse I might have to get my refill of lortab or fill that percodan.  ANY SUGGESTIONS?
Hugs to all

Suze,

Hi, congrats on the continuing battle with avoiding the narcs.
I worry about the back thing but you probably just over did it a bit. Try Ibuprofen, (Advil, Motrin,), before really thinking the worst.

It's probably just overwork. I get that all the time with mowing and lifting heavy items and hauling etc.

Man, was I pissed today when I called my GP for another script of Ultrum which was the least mg offered. He got wierd and asked about my psychiatrist and why he/she has not been working with him as he thought. I told him I have no control over the politics here. They have had three Docs in two months! There is a new Governor elect and if I was appointed for the Mental Health center I would fire half of the staff for imcompetance and lack of education. I told him they appointed three psychiatrists in three months, what can I do?

He really gave me a hard time and I told him I am paying my own cash and should seek another GP since he is being such a wimp. I said it is not even narcotic for crying out loud.

I wasted a whole day waiting for their ****, for the Doc to contact Mental HELL, and that useless doc is not even there today.

Finally, I got a call from one of the psychotechs,(lol) and he said I can pick up my script anytime from this other clinic. I almost said, f$%k it, but said, yeh tomorrow, when I get time. I was in a very homicidal mood so I won't elaborate on the conversation. I know they tape everything anyways. There is alot of water under the bridge with that place. I am tempted to just say f$%k it and not even pick up the script to prove to them I am not addicted to the ****.

Anyway I think your back will be fine, just don't over do it. I know easier said than done. I hear the same all the time. Take care and good luck,

Remember, you are the only person who thinks in your mind! Your thoughts and beleifs of the past have created this moment, and all the moments up to this. What you are now choosing to believe and think and say will create the next moment and the next day and the next month & year.!
You are the power in your world! You get to have whatever you choose to think!
*****Cleaning the mental house after a lifetime of indulging in neg. thoughs (or things) is a bit like going on a diet after a lifetime of indulging in junk food. They both can often create healing crises. As you begin to change your physical diet, the body begins to throw off the accumulation of toxic residue, and as this happends, you can feel rather rotten for a day or two. So it is when you make a desision to change the mental thought patter- your circumstances can begin to seem worse for awhile.
Recall for a moment the end of thanksgiving dinner. The pan is all burnt and crusty, so you put in hot water and soap and let it soak for a while. then you begin to scrape the pan. Now you reallly have a mess; it looks worse then ever. but, if you just keep scrubbing away, soon you will have a pan as goos as new.
It's the same thing with cleaning up dried- on crusty mental patterns. when we soak it with new ideas, all the gook comes to the surface to look at. Just keep doing the new affirmations, and soon you will have totally cleared an old limitation!
