Diphenoxylate is an opioid agonist used for the treatment of diarrhea that acts by slowing intestinal contractions. It was discovered at Janssen Pharmaceutica in 1956. It is a congener to the narcotic Meperidine of which the common brand name is Demerol. This being the case, this medication is potentially habit-forming, particularly in high doses or when long-time usage is involved. Because of this, diphenoxylate is manufactured and marketed as a combination drug with atropine (Lomotil®).

This pharmaceutical strategy is designed to discourage abuse, because the anticholinergic effect of atropine will produce severe weakness and nausea if standard dosage is exceeded.

This medication is classified as a Schedule V under the Controlled Substances Act by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the DEA in the United States when used in preparations. When diphenoxylate is used alone, it is classified as a Schedule II.

Yes but so is the active ingredient in Immodium. Most anti diarreah (diarrhea) drugs are a form of opiate. immodium is designed to not cross the blood brain barrier therefore eliminating any euphoric side effects of the drug and making it available OTC. This one.. i can't be sure of but above it say can be habit forming so i wouldn't take it..

What happened to just doing hair ya know?? I got a job if I want it.. just have to give notice.. which I am sure they won't let me work they will pay me to leave. That is just how they roll..
I started a new muscle relaxer yesterday..  but only issue is that it takes 1-2 hours to work and wears off after 6-8 hours so I almost have to "predict'' spasms.. strange..

I was guessing it was Zanaflex. I've been taking it for a while and I find that it really helps.  My doc said I could take a maximum of 32mg a day and I'm no where near that but from everything I've read it isn't habit forming.  I hope you get some relief with it!
