Has anyone tried this new drug provigil for energy ?????

by addictedtoloratab, Feb 21, 2007 12:00AM
I dont know if anyone has tried this new drug???  I know that energy is a big thing for all of us after detox and for me always ends up in a relapse.  This is a new drug that people are using on wall street because caffiene is just not working on them and they are too tired all day without it.  Its probably not the answer and I know I dont want to switch addictions, but, if I could just get through the first month and then have energy to start functioning again.  Any thoughts???  I looked it up and it looks good..

I myself never have heard of it...but I think I am going to do a search see what it says.

I notice with myself all I do is yawnnn, not so much that I can always necissarily sleep but NO energy. That is a huge thing for me as well w/o my vic's.
I also beleive there is caffeine in the vicodin although I may be wrong.

Before you decide on Provigil, have a good look at the side effects. You will also find that this is an expensive drug. If you are someone who has trouble sleeping or a weak stomach, Provigil will only enhance those symptons. You mentioned the traders on Wall Street. You must remember that they are a money hungry bunch and staying awake for numerous hours in order to outdo their competitors, is their lifestyle. There are an awful lot of burnouts on Wall Street due to the benzos and other types of drugs. Don't bet your health on their mode of drug applications. The smartest thing anyone, who is lacking energy can do, is see a  health therapist or a nutritionist. It's better to be on the safe side and not take risks because you heard of this that or the other thing. Your health is the most important thing right now, don't risk it on possibilities.

Thank-you for your nice posts.  Mangee, you are right I looked into it and it is very expensive, but, looks so good to me.  I researched it some more and found out they do use it in rehab and its great for opiate detox but as addictive.. So I dont know, Im still taking 2 a day, I am just counting my prayers for that, a month ago it was 15.. Hugs

Provigil treated me well....not at all like a strict amphetamine - and if you escalate dose you dont escalate effects....its far from strictly addictive (although psychologically some can get addicted to placebo's) - you dont lose your appetite like amphetamines either.....and you do have the energy that your looking for. Some think its a new miracle drug! Probably wall street stockbrokers.......

I tried provigil and it made me feel psychotic -- ugh. never again.

by wait2long, Apr 18, 2008 10:27PM
its does say on the manufactures website that it can be abused and can lead to dependence...
but does dependence necessarily mean it is addictive, physically??  will withdrawal symptoms can occur when you stop?
i dont know...do your research before you do anything...i had never heard of it before.

I took 400 mgs a day and it did absolutely nothing! Don't waste your money-get a cup of coffee instead. I'm serious-it had no effect at all!

I have been using provigil for 6 months or so..my doctor wrote me a script so it is cheaper for me...online thet are around 130 dollars for 90- 200 mg pills...i tied them/neighbor takes them for depression and only took 1 lortab that day...later when i went to quit, i stocked up...have not developed a tolerence...they are a mood enhancer...will enhance the mood that you have...if u r so tired u cant move...they dont do much even if you take 2 at a time...if you feel a bit draggy...they can help remarkably..i do not get the nervous side effect i get from caffiene...very smooth and has been a life saver for me for work and exercise ...no high   just makes u motivated...i have info on them if anyone would like it to read and decide if it is right for you...pm me

and agai...anything can be abused..i have not had a problem with it but i would never abuse nyquil either...anything can be abused but is not known to be addictive as a rule

I found this site looking for info on Provigil.  I have been in a 12 step group for addiction for many, many years so I know a little about it.

Don't confuse medical necessity with abuse.

I agree with worried878.  I am taking provigil for post-chemo fatigue.  I beat the cancer but I had trouble getting out if bed that didn't go away.  6 months after chemo, I was still tired -all- the time.  I'd sleep 12 hours then take a nap during the day.

My doc put me on provigil and I feel better than I have in many years - since before I had the cancer.

One definition of addiction is something which causes problems in my life.  If I have problems at work, or at home, or financial, or health then it's a problem.

Am I addicted?  I sure wouldn't want to go without it. If I was taking more than the prescribed dose or snorting it or taking it for the buzz, or if it interfered with my life THEN I'd be a "problem" user.

Not being able to get out of bed was -really- interfering with my life.  Provigil helps me keep my job, do things with my family and enjoy my hobbies again. That's what it's for, right?

Don't confuse medical necessity with abuse.

I was given a prescription for Provigil after I was diagnosed with sleep apnea.  I only take it if I feel I didn't sleep well the night before.  I wasn't told about any "abuse" from my doctor, but it says right on the bottle "do not have alcohol when taking this drug".  There might not be an abuse factor, but there is probably drug interaction problems.

I have watched my girlfriend take this drug who was prescribed Provigil after head trauma from a car accident. She was the type of person that had more energy then alot of people. She became very thin, and was in a constant state of LaLa euphoria, she was like talking to someone on coke times 10.. She is now pregnant and off the drug.. she is complaining of being tired and fatiqued.. makes me think the drug is too powerful and addicting.. not to mention what the long term effects must be.. she cant wait to get back on it after the pregnancy,  I hope she dosnt go back on it.. it changes her personality, dramatically.
We have become sadly such a society of pill popping people. Instead of doing something healthy like eating right and exercise , most people think they can just pop a pill and fix whatever problem exists in their lives.. while the Pharmeceutical companies rake in the cash and Doctors hand out the pills like candy.. People wake up! A short term fix will sadly create long term effects.

My neighbor is anorexic..hospitalized early for the anorexia when she gets down to 80 lbs...she uses provigil for fatigue and it was also given to her to increase her appetite cos it is NOT an amphetamine//an amphetamine will decrease ur appetite...provigil is often used for depression..and as ADs have the side effect of wt gain..provigil can as well..but not as a rule/it is not physically habit forming..but mentally anything can be habit forming i guess/a morning cup of coffee is hard to do without if u try and skip it//people who work nights often use these like no-doze..low potential for abuse but i am sure someone could find a way....i am still on 200 mgs a day after well over a yr..sometimes i dont take it for a week cos i dont need it..then there r days where i take 400 mgs which is my rx-ed dose...no side effects cept if u take more than u need u will not feel good...it is a nervous jittery feeling so dont recommend taking over what u need..it is self limiting..it does not hit the appetite center of the brain like an amphetamine does so if someone is losing weight, u may need to check into other causes..possibly depression or some type of undiagnosed disease process..drugs like crystal meth, crack, cocaine, amphetamines like ritilin will make u lose wt..not provigil

and anything can be abused..coffee can be abused..cigs can be abused..i have a friend who abused benadryl..another who abuses lyrica//and she gets a buzz off the stuff//loves it and lyrica has a low potential for abuse..alcohol is abused, nyquil, cough medicine, paint thinners, diet pills, even exercise can be taken over the edge.....i would say if u weee the type to abuse everything u touch then it is probably bestnot to take anything at all....i have a friend who wont even take cold meds...she is strict na and anything that can alter the brain she will not take including coffee....i do beleive not everyone abused everything they touch..i do not..have no desire to even take lyrica much less abuse it..havenever been a big benzo fan cept when i had tmj i took valium as a relaxer..never abused it...I will admit to abusing narcotics and nicotine...and i know i can never take either of these again...everyone is different,,and only u know what and if u r abusing sumpin...this drug made it possible for me to work during the months after detox..and i woulda rather taken it than relapses so i could go to work...always be safe
