Help with my legs

by KirstenHere, Aug 20, 2008 04:53PM
So you all know I'm almost done with day 2. Wasn't feeling alll that bad...but now...OMG, MY LEGS! I tried to lay down to sleep, no such thing. I'm sooo tired, but my legs won't stop moving. I bought some bananas...tried to eat one, kind of made me sick, but I kept it down. isn't there something over the counter for rls? I was thinking I saw it at Rite Aid once.

Anyone with any advice, please please, I'm begging. I WANT TO WIN THIS!

Thanks for your supportive words!  Sorry about your legs.  Mine finally calmed down about 15 minutes before my alarm went off.  I would get up and eat bites of high protein bars, a deviled egg, anything that seemed appealing and not barfy at the moment.  Orange juice has lots of potassium, too...does that appeal to you?  Anyway, as you know, diet is everything for us right now, so eat every 2-4 hours to make sure your electrolytes are as they should be.  I'll check in with you tomorrow.

I know the bananas may help. I hate bananas, starting to get used to them after 5 day. LOL, maybe orange juice though, I'd been trying to find something else that has potassium... I think its called Hylands restful legs or something like that..the OTC med for it. it might help, I think some people here have tried it too. ttys!

I wrapped me up in an electric blanket that made a word of difference I was finally able to sleep after four days ....

That is the worst and to top it all off it effects both my legs and arms!!  Baths, showers worked a bit for me but honestly didn't finad anything but time that stopped that feeling.  I read once where people were swearing that a bar of soap under your fitted sheet helps?  I never tried it but anything is worth trying!!  I know!

Kirsten, I have the RLS really really BAD too.  I am on my 12th day off of darvocet, vicodin and soma cold turkey.  I still get it at night but I can tell you GET THE HYLANDS RLS OR MUSCLE CRAMP PILLS!  I read several threads about this and finally went to Walmart and got some.  It makes all the differnce in the world!  I take two now and that helps me immensely!

HOT BATHS!!!!! That is the only thing that helped my restless legs.
If you are up to it...exercising helps too...or going for a brisk walk.
Good Luck!

I agree with toxic...For me RLS was the worst!!!  The one thing that really helped me was hot baths...I even put my pillow in a trash bag and slept in just enough water to cover my legs....When it got cold , I just let some out and added hot...The other thing that helped me was zanaflex, it is a presribed muscle relaxant...I tried everything...I even had it in my arms...I know the pain you are in, and i hope it ends soon....
stay strong

I had pretty much the same thing. It was as if my legs had a mind of their own. I also had a feezing sensation in my back and would get my wife to cuddle me in an effort to get warm. I tried different ways of settling my legs down and the only thing that worked somewhat was placing a pillow between my legs allowing my feet to stick out from under the covers. I also drank green tea and honey in an effort to relax. The restless leg syndrome will eventually stop on it's own after a while but because you are in withdrawal it is extremely annoying. In withdrawal your nerves are so much on end that you notice the tiniest of annoyances. Everything becomes much larger and much more noticable then at any other time. As time passes you will see small changes in the way you look and react. Some symptoms will disappear altogether while others will magnify for a while and then they too will slide away. After a little while evrything will become easier to handle and eventually you will be swimming in a sea of delight as you come to the end of your journey. Stay the course and don't let anything stay in your way. The final result is worth the trip.

I felt OK today..Antsy at work Kirsten, but OK. Tonight as I watch the Olympics my restless legs and involuntary shifting up and down of my back is driving me nuts. One small bit of advice I have learned for a tiny bit of jonesin' alleviation is to watch something on T.V. that will give you a blast of adrenalin. Something scary, or something exciting like the Olympics. You get a bit of a natural rush. Distracting for just a moment.
Thursday will be day 4 for me. Have a good night. Mind over matter.
Don't give in. Then you will feel crappy about yourself again, and repeat
the process all over again. Over in less than time than it takes you to PMS and get relief!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  LOL! Be happy!!!!!!!!

we did a study on rls at my hosptital and the results are in my journal   without looking i remember iron was a big need and to take ur supps with tonic water for the quinine...support hose from the medical supply as tight as u can take it or ace wraps help..massage/ice /heat and exercise each day can even help prevent it....study was done and the more active a person is the less likely rls will occur

exercise has gotta be one of the keys... I had to run around (literally) at work the last two days and my legs aren't feeling too bad here on day 5. I wish everyone else restful legs this evening. :) I know its hard and it *****!!

by worried878, Aug 20, 2008 09:42PM
i quit along with a couple of others..we emailed daily...i am a gym rat and the other lady was a dance instructor...no rls...the other lady did not work, didnt exercise and had it bad...we were all at approximately the same dose when we quit....if u read the etiology of rls u will understand why activity releases the lactic acid that causes the pain...

by addict3, Aug 20, 2008 09:45PM
Try the hot baths, then wrap your legs with ace bandages, if you have the valium or something else take it after you wrap your legs, ankle to knee,or the hose Worried mentioned then go to bed!
That was the ONLY way I could get any relief from RLS and then some sleep.
Good luck, Hope that helps some.

by addict200, Aug 20, 2008 09:52PM
Pls call ur doctor and get something for the rls, I know it's the worst part of withdrawal but you can get an rx for something specifically made for rls, it doesn't have to be a benzo. You don't need to suffer.

by worried878, Aug 20, 2008 09:59PM
some doctors will give u a dopamine agonist to help if it is severe but these drugs have side effects as well..after addiction our dopamine pathways are messed up and hence RLS...other causes of RLS are common and not drug related but if u dont normally suffer from rls except during wd then it is ur dopamine mechanism in ur brain that is in trouble right now...talk to ur docotor if it persists but it usually passes with time....iron and other supps can help...smaoking and caffeine aggravates it..warm batchs and wraps can help..exercise and massage/heat and ice....if it lingers then talk to ur doctor  they have an otc med at walmart ofr it as well

i had no idea smoking makes it worse! Do you know how this happens?

by KirstenHere, Aug 20, 2008 11:18PM
Quick update: I went and bought some stuff from the drugstore...some kind of RLS stuff. It seems to work for about an hour...and just like an addict, I have to take more than needed. LoL! The good thing is, there are no side effects...it doesn't say you can take when you want, but it does say to take every 4 hours OR as needed for pain..that's all I needed to read. LoL!
I also went and got some clonsopan(spellin) from my mother and for sure helps me relax. I did get about 1/2 sleep a bit ago, and it felt great...just need a lot more.
Tomorrow I start on day 3, please pray for me, I"m scared to death. My pain in my back and ovary are off the chart, but trying hard to deal with it.
I may be back later tonite or tomorrow. THanks to everyone who s helpin me, it really means more than you'll ever know. :-)

by broknbck, Aug 20, 2008 11:25PM
how come the antibiotics don't work for the ovary thing?

for your back, try laying on a couch that has arms or a loveseat if you are not so tall and having your legs higher seems to ease the back and relax it. might help the pain.

what is the biggest thing you are scared of? lets talk about it and get your fears under control. it helps alot.
