Help

I have been addicted (on and off) to Oxycontin for 7 years.  Please don't judge I was burned on 20% of my body and had to get skin grafts, this it probably one of the most painful things that could happen to anyone in this world, and the drugs that they give you for this pain is very very addictive, so please do not respond if u are just going to judge me, I need help not judgments. At the beginning of Sept. I started taking methadone to help me get off the Oxycontin but the methadone made me very very depressed (like I planned out my suicide).  I was only on 60 milligrams so I started tapering off it, and I'm down to 15 milligrams now but when I got down to about 25 milligrams I started craving and using the Oxycontin again. this was about 3 weeks ago. I don't take it all the time only about 2 or 3 times a week but I take about 45 milligrams each time/day I take it.  Now this is the part I'm worried about, just this week I found out I was pregnant about 11 or 12 weeks and I'm doing everything I can to get off everything the methadone and the Oxycontin but I am so worried that I may have already caused damage to my baby. Please if anybody can give me any advise or if anybody knows about these drugs and pregnancy please let me know if my baby is going to be OK. Thank you.

First of all listen to all those on here...they know what they are talking aobut..i've recently discover a book  by Dr Gabor Mate. cant remember what its called but its on addiction..reading it right now...talks about women addicts of whom some  are pregnant , (at least thats the part im on right now) look into it. It sounds hopefull. But of course your own doc this the best one to give you the best advise. Good luck and congrats on your baby!

As everyone has said, talk to your OBGYN and get brutally honest.

If you think the withdrawl YOU go through is bad, just imagine the withdrawl your baby will go through.

You need a slow, slow taper, and only your OBGYN (with the help of someone that's familiar with tapering as I don't think OBGYN's know that kind of stuff) will know what long-term damage it will cause.

I can tell you that if you don't stop, you will give birth to a baby that is hooked on narcotics, and that's no way for a baby to enter the world, don't you think?

I'm VERY proud of you for making the decision to clean yourself up, if for no other reason than for the baby. Keep posting here and we'll be with you each & every step of the way.

Hi!   You need to talk with the doctor about everything. He/she will know how to stabilize you. Are you still in pain?

Don't try to taper yourself or stop cold tukey. It's dangerous. Tell the doctor what you're taking and the exact amounts.  You need to do this right away!

Good luck!

Try not to beat yourself up over this.  Turn it into positive energy and work hard at getting off the meds safely, working your recovery and planning the birth of your baby.  It is a wonderful gift to give yourself and that little one......sara

Thanks so much for your support, yes I am seeing a counselor right now which is one of the reasons I am so disappointed in myself for the Oxy relapse 3 weeks ago, and to find out I am preg. on top of that is just horrible, I'm just hoping I can get off all this and get back on track, and most of all my baby will be ok.

Please talk with your OB about all of this.  He will be able to calm your fears as he knows your history.  He will also be able to help you with a taper plan that will be safe for both the baby and you.  Have you thought about talking with a counselor?  That will help dealing with your addiction also.         sara

I doubt there is anything wrong that he did not see but again, we are not doctors. I still think you need to get honest with him. You have talked with him already and you are obviously very concerned, rightfully so, so tell him everything and let him reassure you. Besides, he may be able to give you a taper plan that is better, even safer, than what you are doing.

Thanks for your response, I had a ultrasound done (this week) when I found out I was pregnant and the Dr said everything looked great, the baby looked fine, and my Dr does know that I'm on methadone but he does not know I went down to 15 mi and he does not know that I've been using Oxycontin again for the past 3 week, so I guess I'm just wondering if their could be something wrong with the baby that the Dr could not see on the ultrasound.

bbabay, No one here will judge you we were and/or are going through what you are right now. I am addicted to oxys at a much higer dosage than you are now. I know about pain and hw these drugs make it so you can function through your pain. Methadone is defineatley not what you want to take to detox from oxys as the detox from methadone is far worse. You said you are taking 45 mg 3X a week, if so why don't you try to taper yourself down @ 10 mg at a time.  This way you should be able to get off of the oxys with some lessened w/d effects. Oh BTW congrats on your pregnancy, so now you have a very good reason to quit. As far as doing harm to your baby I'm not sure you should talk to your doctor and get their take on it. Since yo are pregnant you probably shouln't go CT, but again this is smething you should talk to your doctor about. We are all here to help you so please keep posting and everyone here will try to help you through this. I will pray for you and your baby and I am pulling for you---Rich

Hi & Welcome,

First know that no one here will judge you so you need not worry about that.

That being said, no one here can tell you that there is anything wrong with your baby either. You need to see your OBGYN right away and get honest. They see this every day and know what tests to do, what to look for and can provide the best approach to your situation. And please do not be concerned that the doctor will judge you. As I said, they see this more than you would think. I am certain everything is fine but you truly need to visit with your doctor.

Please don't try to come off on your own. That is not the way to go.

Also, don't worry so much right now, it is not good for you or the baby to be stressed out. Make the appointment and let us know how you are doing.
