Touching story about addiction, complete with the predictable outcome for the addict. Unfortunately, I don't agree with them suing the hospital one bit. The hospital didn't put 50 oxys into her arm, she did. If she never told them she was a former opiate addict and they had no record of it, that's on her, not them. Sounds to me like she relapsed the second she failed to disclose that fact.
Secondly, I also don't agree with any method of treating addiction other than full decriminalization and regulation. As long as we, as a society, treat addiction as something shameful or "morally wrong", we will continue to see addicts dying. And here's the hard truth no one comes out and says: There's a significant portion of the population that is 100% ok with addicts dying because they think addiction represents a moral failing.
This article brings it all to reality of how big a problem opiods have grown into. I also agree the doctor is not at fault, but a national monitoring system would be highly beneficial. If a person at any times asks to be placed on the "do not prescribe," has attended a rehab program, or any other flag then this list would be available nationally.
I work for a clinic for low-income people (we do not prescribe and do not house anything scheduled). There are several clinics like mine putting together policies to treat, wean, and help addicts.
I just wonder how much targeting in being done at the manufacturer level as well? Opiods are a big money maker for pharm companies, and minimal warnings are given about their addictive nature.
I just read this article. Such a loss for her family.
I do not agree with them in wanting to sue the hospital. That doctor did not know she was an addict. That is why we stress so much to be honest with our medical professionals.
It also showed that addiction doesnt discriminate. She came from a good home and she had so much potential. This is always such a tragedy~ May she RIP.
