How Long Till The High Anxiety Stops?

by Penelope14, Apr 17, 2008 01:28PM
Im two weeks off methadone, & Im ok but I have anxiety that is over the top! I have no reasons to be stressed out, my home life is fine, Im financially fine, but my body feels so shaken up, its unreal, how much longer is this gonna last? I was told by my addiction specialist that everyday I should be getting better, I,m wondering if they just say that to everyone to keep them from relapse? As I dont see much improvement in the anxiety department, its so bad that I sweat alot, which is embarassing & not fun. Penelope

penelope i am sorry you are having such a difficult time with the anxiety. when i went ct from oc's i had very bad anxiety also and had to go to the doctor and get on an antidepresant and it helped so much..i dont know if that is an option 4 you there is also things at the health food store that help with the anxiety. hope you feel better soon♥holly

Hi Penelope,

I got on an anti depressant as well. But your dr is right, everyday will get better. Butyou might want to try one. Lexapro is fast acting.

Good luck!

I just emailed my doctor, but Im not getting my hopes up, as she may see that I went to see a addiction specialist that gave me clonidine, it may set off some red-flags, will see?   Penelope

I hope it works out for you. :)

Penelope if it is as bad as mine was you need to get something for it. I would have full blown panic attacks and my blood pressure would sky rocket. Can be dangerous, see a doctor and get something for the anxiety.

I still battle with the anxiety ,but it's not so overwhelming anymore and it's brief bouts it doesn't last as long as it was before.I just feel jittery inside.I don't get that feeling of impending doom in my stomach that radiates to your limbs and makes you break out in a sweat. It's more like nervous tension now.At 2 weeks my anxiety was still through the roof too.I hope it gets better for you real soon.Lots of Love.

With oxycodone withdrawal for me, it took about a week before the anxiety started going away... I'm sure with methadone that that withdrawal symptoms are going to be longer though. But the anxiety *did* get better. I would second the motion to ask your doctor about getting something short-term to control the anxiety. And like some people have stated (everyone is different though), starting an anti-depressant may help you as well if anxiety/depression are one of the reasons you started using in the first place.

But in any case, keep in mind - high anxiety is your brain trying to tell you to 'fix' things by going back to the pills. As your body adjusts to life without your drug, the anxiety will lesson. It is just part of the process and it does get better.

Thanks everyone, & Im sure its just a matter of time till I get some relief, this is a hard one to get thru, even coming off at such a low dose it hasnt been easy. I wish it would just go away, I,ve paid my dues to methadone, & still see very little relief. Penelope

Lexapro is a good drug and that is what i took for detox...got on it 2 weeks before and have stopped it now...for anxiety tho there are different drugs that help a bit more...anxiety and depression seem to be grouped together but are not really the same...when i took lexapro when i was situationally depressed instead of a real chemical imbalance it made me have trouble sleeping and more anxious...it is good to check with your doctor but AD's like paxil and zoloft/tricyclics like elavil/trazodone are often used for anxiety type depression...It is hard to find a doc who knows alot about all these meds as there now tons of them on the market...2 weeks is not a long time tho and i still feel anxiety from my hydro habit over 2 months later...lets hang in there

Hi worried, im doing some exercise in daytime trying to keep busy but finding my sleep a bit **** keep wakening at 3-4am etc then going back till 10am as prior to that was straight through , i think its anxiety related though because wakign with nasuea which is horendous trouble thinking at the moment too , maybe it explains that article i found i posted, normal things like zoloft dont even come close but i know where all different, anyhow back to catch some more Zzzzzzzzzz post later cheers

U r right bubba...nothing completely takes that awful feeling away for a while...it is a challenge...i was just making the point that some anti-dep are better for anxiety based depression than others... i have experienced anxiety type depression verses slow moving depression all my adult years off and on...i have a friend right now who has the depreesion that immoblizers her...she sleeps 16 hours a day...wellbutrin works well for her....wellbutrin, as i took it to assist with smoking cessation wires me to the max...i would sleep like 3 hours a night but wasnt tired...just did not like being awake all night while evreyone else was asleep...celexa did this to me as well...lexapro at 10 mg did this and had to cut to 5mg ...just pointingout that some AD work better with some conditions or types of depression than others...I choose not to take them long term but see no problem with it as I beg my daughter to get back on hers when she stops them...she will obsess and worry til she is miserable and will call me 10 x a day...i love hearing from her but not under those circumstances

I started taking Paxil (Paroxetine) about a week ago, and I think it's starting to help with anxiety a bit. I haven't felt any negative side-effects from it yet so I'm going to stay on it another week and see what happens. Not sure at this point if I'm going to have it prescribed long-term or not... but so far so good.

Hi worried for sure some help alot of people, wish they did me maybe because i used opiods/methadone for so long they dont work resistant kind of, I must admit the Paws stuff after reading realy worries me now im doubting i can do this taper at all, its just taking a toll on me, i feel so mad that this stuff is so addictive. Maybe ill switch over to Bup or something that way or stretch it out longer like 1mg every 2 months..well i got6hrs sleep so far vs my 9hrs sleep i normally had cheers and how are you doing?  N
