How long do extreme delusions last during detox

My ex husband was put into detox psych ward due to hallucinations and delusions.  He was admitted on saturday but had been in this state since last thursday.  He is still experiencing this.  Will it ever stop??? Is there a chance his brain has been altered forever????? Im nervous and scare.  He is father to my 7 year old.  So far she thinks he has a really bad flu.  What do i tell her.  I need advice please..

When I worked the surgical floor in my hospital we would occasionally get a patient who would begin going through dt's on the 3rd or 4th day post op.  They would hallucinate, seeing things crawling on the walls, sometimes become very aggressive and end up in 4 point leather restraints.  This typically lasted about 2, maybe 3 days tops.  We would give IV ativan to help with the dt's.  They would go home after a few days and then who knows how they did.  Like many say, getting through the detox is the easy part, its the aftercare and staying sober that poses the biggest challenge.  Let your daughter know her daddy is sick and getting help.  Remember, children know a lot more than we give them credit for...Good Luck!

I'm not sure what your husband is detoxing from but, chances are, he will return to normal. I've seen other posts in the past where people experienced the same thing and they made it through just fine and got back to their old self.

Like mentioned above, the withdrawals are the easy part. It's the staying clean that can be tricky. We combat that with aftercare. If he works on his recovery for the rest of his life he will never have to be in this position again. Once he gets home try and get him to come on the forum and post. There are some wonderful people here who will bend over backwards to help him continue living a clean life.

Detoxing from alcohol is frightening, both to the patient and the loved ones who witness it. You didn't mention how much liquor your ex consumed; usually there is a ratio between amount of drinking/severity of detox. If he did drink heavily, and to be hallucinating I would assume he had, hallucinations could last anywhere from 7-10 days AGAIN depending on his drinking consumption. They will end, however, and he will improve and be much healthier if he can stop now. I can't say whether his brain has been altered but let's cross that bridge when we come to it. He will also have shakiness & probably nause aduring this time. Alcoholism is a disease and he is a very sick man. Be supportive and try not to project your fears for your child into interactions with your ex at this time. I hope he will enter a longer term rehab when discharged from the hospital, it seems he may need it. When addicts, alcoholics, whoever, are in first stages of recovery they HAVE to be selfish and concentrate on getting THEMSELVES better for themselves. Allow him this but try to still be present and supportive along the way. If your child has seen your ex drunk frequently, maybe you could explain to her that Daddy is trying to get better so he won't drink so much anymore (if she can handle it). Good luck and God bless.
