by tohealth, Apr 08, 2007 12:00AM
How longs to alcohol withdrawal symptoms typically last? 1 day? 1 week? 1 month or more

When I stop drinking, tongue tremor, and tongue fasciculations (twitches) begin.

don't drink sounds like your highly allergic to it I've never heard of that in my life and I've known a lot of alcoholics.  You best talk to a alcohol addiction specialist or MD  but I'd definatly stay away from the alcohol its sounds horrible for you.  I've heard of body twiches but tonque no sorry good luck and peace to you.

i keep having a lot of symptoms that doctors tell me are withdrawal symptoms from alcohol but they have lasted about a month and a half already.Is that right? I have extreme tiredness,headaches,dizziness,and just feeling unwell in general.Could it all be down to the alcohol?

Is the first thing you think of when you wake up every morning, is alcohol, then its highly likely you have a problem. And if your willing to do something about it good on you.

If your going cold Turkey - Stopping on your own without help then I must admit your a brave person. Withdrawel symptoms can last a month or longer depending on the person, body etc, but the need for a drink will last for years. You are not allergic to drik like previous people have advided

As for the other post "I have extreme tiredness,headaches,dizziness,and just feeling unwell in general." that sounds one hell of a hang over

Alcohol withdrawal refers to a group of symptoms that may occur from suddenly stopping the use of alcohol after chronic or prolonged ingestion.

Not everyone who stops drinking experiences withdrawal symptoms, but most people who have been drinking for a long period of time, or drinking frequently, or drink heavily when they do drink, will experience some form of withdrawal symptoms if they stop drinking suddenly.

There is no way to predict how any individual will respond to quitting. If you plan to stop drinking and you have been drinking for years, or if you drink heavily when you do drink, or even if you drink moderately but frequently, you should consult a medical professional before going "cold turkey."

Withdrawal Symptoms:

Mild to moderate psychological symptoms:

    * Feeling of jumpiness or nervousness
    * Feeling of shakiness
    * Anxiety
    * Irritability or easily excited
    * Emotional volatility, rapid emotional changes
    * Depression
    * Fatigue
    * Difficulty with thinking clearly
    * Bad dreams

Mild to moderate physical symptoms:

    * Headache - general, pulsating
    * Sweating, especially the palms of the hands or the face
    * Nausea
    * Vomiting
    * Loss of appetite
    * Insomnia, sleeping difficulty
    * Paleness
    * Rapid heart rate (palpitations)
    * Eyes, pupils different size (enlarged, dilated pupils)
    * Skin, clammy
    * Abnormal movements
    * Tremor of the hands
    * Involuntary, abnormal movements of the eyelids

Severe symptoms:

    * A state of confusion and hallucinations (visual) -- known as delirium tremens
    * Agitation
    * Fever
    * Convulsions
    * "Black outs" -- when the person forgets what happened during the drinking episode

Out of curiousity, how long can these symptoms last?  I realise they can vary, depending upon person, how long and how much they drank.  Possibly also what they drank?  (I ask because my boyfriend is an alcoholic, and lately he's been talking about being dizzy, nauseated, and occasionally having tremors--then he'll say he knows it's not from beer because he hasn't had one in a while)
