How long does it take for things to get back to normal after Oxy detox?

Hi everyone! I have been reading many post here and have acquired some new tips..thanks!. My husband Gordon is on day 25 now for Oxycontin (320 mgs to 400 mgs daily) and day 11 for diazepam (30 mgs daily). He was put on Oxycontin 4 yrs ago as other pain meds were not working for his pain due to a MVA 18 yrs ago. He has chronic pain and a head injury to his frontal lobes. 2 yrs ago I wanted him off the oxy's as he was getting more and more depressed. He was having severe mood swings, always angry, always negative, loss of memory and a change in personality. I felt that I had lost my husband! He never abused the meds, only took as prescribed. I finally convinced him that he was depressed because of the oxy's and as they were not working for his pain anyways, we decided to get off of them. He went into detox for the first 3 days and then came home. We went through the normal withdrawals (which was pure hell) but now at day 25 it seems the end is nowhere near in sight. My question is how long does it take? He is not sleeping, he is having anxiety/tension and is still very weak. He is still unable to relax and has a knot in his stomach all the time. He still has no desire to eat but he does eat what I give him because he knows he has to.
Can anyone tell me when will this end? Thanks!

Regarding your husband on day 25. I was on Oxycodone, 90 mg per day for three years, I went cold turkey because I told my Doctor that that's the way I wanted  do it, how do ween down without cheating, I knew I would cheat. He gave me clonidine which was a life saver.

This was my second detox, and it took me about 6 weeks to get back to "normal", it's different because no two people are alike when it comes to kicking these things, every detox/recovery is different for every individual.

With the dose I was taking, COMPLETE normalcy took about 5 weeks, so beachtowel you and your hubby hang in there, he WILL be his old self again, he was on a unheard of dose IMO, and his Dr should lose his license for prescribing that much. A dealer in a white coat.

Give it a couple month's, and I bet by then he will be back, and he will feel SO MUCH better.

Good Luck

Yes our plate is very full. We / I have just sold our house and today we are buying a new one. I have to go and meet the home inspector this morning. If all goes well, we will be moving at the end of the month. Luckily we have 3 strong sons as I don't think my husband will be in much shape to help with the move.
The detox was bad timing as there is so much going on with our family but I felt he needed off of the oxycontin.
Just want to thank everyone for their support and suggestions.

You should have joined the lawsuit.  It doesn't make sense that they say it isn't habit forming if you take it for pain.  What the HELL but I took it for recreational use I'm sorry to say.  Honestly I could not do this again now that I am starting to feel a bit better I am to scared to go back.  I am honestly scared to ever go through those 4 years again.  I got chills down my back thinking about it.  I'm dead serious when I say that.

Sounds like you had a rough go at it too! When a doctor gives you your first prescription for oxycontin and they tell you it could be habbit forming..that's a joke..maybe if they told their patients the truth..that they would be dropped into the bowels of hell with the withdrawal symptoms, maybe the patient would tear up that prescription and never start!

Thanks for your comments.. He left detox as he felt they weren't really doing anything for him and the conditons were terrible.  With his back and neck injury he couldn't get comfortable in detox.  He had a 5 day run of clonodine, which helped with the racing heart. He's had a hard time with the withdrawals but he is very committed to staying clean from the oxy's. He feels like he is in limbo...he has come this far but is unsure when the end will come and how will he know it's over?
Yes his pain doc is upset with us as she wanted him to stay on the oxy's and denied that the oxy's were the cause of his depression and mood swings. Thanks Again!

Yo I was actually on 1600mgs a day injecting oxys and I cold turkeyed for 2 months and felt horrible still.  I went back but lowered my dosage and finally got down to about 200mgs a day and I ct it and I am on day 23 and I feel pretty good but it was a unbelievable hell to lower that dosage.  I couldn't take it anymore after two months and thats why I went back but I quit and I have never felt this good off oxy for the last 3 years I still can feel it a bit but I don't feel like I'm completely dead at all and can actually enjoy some things now.  Good luck!  Man I really feel for people who have to go through that.

Welcome to the forum.....
320-400 mgs a day that is 4 or 5 80's a day thats a lot..........

Taking that much Oxycotin a day for that long is very addictive both from a Physical addiction and psychological addiction...........

I understand that he had legitamate pain but did his doctor ever consider what the repercussions of drug abuse and addiction............writing for 320-400 mgs of oxycotin to me is Malpractice, Negligent and he should loose his license  to practice medicine.......I would take him to court and sue him for millions..........
I'm sorry if my emotions are running a little wild here but that much oxycotin a day is criminal......
What did this doctor think was going to happen after that much drugs for so long.........
