How long will Lortab withdrawl last

Hello. I am 55, educated. and so embarrassed to realize that I am a drug addict.  I SUFFER from Migraines.  My exposure to Lortab started thru treatment from my Neurologist.  He only gives me 15 per month, but I really liked the high I got from them, and started using them for the buzz, and not for pain.  Interestingly enough, they don't really help with Migraine pain at all.  About 3 years ago, I started having Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.  The Workers Comp doc gave me an additional, pretty unlimited script for Lortab, in addition to the 15- 10 mg pills I get from the Neuro.  I had gastric bypass 10 years ago, so I'm not supposed to take any anti inflammatories, because they would cause stomach bleeding. Last winter, I got about 90 pills from an Orthopoedist, and then an additional 30 per month from my PCP for about the last year.
I don't think I've EVER taken more than 40 mg in 1 day.  Most days, 10 mg, but lately up to 30 mg.  I've been tapering off inconsistently for a couple of weeks. Yesterday I only took 5 mg, and I'm damned and determined not to take anymore.
My nose is stuffy and runny, my glands are swollen, my throat is killing me, and I ache all over.  I've been having night sweats for a couple of weeks.

What the hell is wrong with me?
I've read the Thomas recipe and the the other detox recipe, but I am on SSRI anti depressants so most of it is off limits for me.

How long is the misery going to last?  Can I really quit for good on my own, or do I need to join something like NA?  If I were younger, I don't think I would be so embarrassed, but for goodness sakes, I'm a Grandmother and I KNOW BETTER.

Hi :)
Do try the Thomas recipe.... in fact, only 5htp is off limits because of the antidepressant you are taking but the rest of the advices would be ok for you if i remember right. The ltyrosine can make you feel jittery during the first week of wds so you can make it without it.

There is nothing wrong with the symptons you are having, quite normal during detox. The mineral supplements will help you with the muscle pains. Don't forget some natural remedy for RLS , nights are a nightmare enough with the insomnia and RLS. Drink a lot of fluids, you are detoxing through sweating too and you need to keep yourself hydrated. Hot baths will soothe your body and muscles ( add epsom salts, it really works ). Ibuprofen for pain and immodium for diarrhea

Your nose will be runny for a couple of weeks maybe. And some of the physical wds will last for 7/10 days mostly but some will linger longer in time like lack of energy, sleep, some bouts of depression and anxiety... DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED!!! You can do it and you will pull through it, take each day, each hour at a time...

Don't feel embarrassed.. addiction knows no age limit, trust me... there are a lot of members of your age here. Detoxing is not as hard as staying clean so the idea of attending NA is a good one...

ok, step by step.. stay here posting how you are feeling so that you don't feel alone at this time ... GOOD LUCK :)

Just curious for my own self - why not the L-Tyrosine if you're on an SSRI?

I take prescription anti-inflammatorys, Voltaren, and/or Toradol! I dont regularly take Advil or Tylenol! During withdrawals, I tried Tylenol PM to help with sleep and it really didn't work well!

Because of the previous bypass surgery, check with the doctor before taking the NSAIDS but, I have not had any problems even though I was told to avoid them! I was also told not to smoke because of the surgery, but I still do! SIGH!

Good luck!

Yes, go ahead and take whatever NSAID you can tolerate. Take it on a schedule like three times a day.

Also, sometimes our perceived pain level increases when we stop the pills. Be patient because it levels out quickly.

I'm sorry this happened to you and, believe me, it's not uncommon.

Thank you so much for reaching out to me.  This forum is helping me get thru the day.  You are right, we could be twins.  Did you take Tylenol or NSAIDS to get thru the pain of withdrawal?

Hi Crazy! Welcome!  I am very similar to you! I'm 53, College degree, had a long corporate career, etc! I also had Gastric Bypass surgery about 11 years ago! I lost 140 lbs, and have kept it off, and then some! I got addicted to pain meds almost 2 years ago! It started with knee and shoulder pain from being overweight for years!

I quit cold turkey nearly 3 months ago! It was, and still is difficult, but you can do it! I take prescription anti-inflammatorys and they do help with pain and swelling! I was also told not to take NSAIDS after my surgery due to the possible stomach bleeding! I have not had any problems at all! But definitely check with your doctor!

I just wanted to welcome you and add my support to the others! You are not alone, and this is nothing to ashamed of! The key, at least for me is, to recognize and admit you have a problem, reach out for support and help, and to take control of your life! Take care and I wish you the very best!

I haven't read anything about using Tylenol or Advil for the body aches and pain (the worst symptom for me.)

Is there any advice/ medical evidence for or against?

Thanks.  I had no idea.  I really am determined to quit.  These pills are ruining my life.  I don't enjoy anything anymore, except my grand baby.
I  "used" food to make myself feel better, and after I lost all of the weight, I switched addictions.
I feel like a low life piece of **** for allowing this to happen to me, when I saw all the warning signs along the way.
I am grateful that I still have my job and my family, although I have lost my self respect.
Time to get real.

Hi there-    I just want to mention that you should be very careful in the future about rx's from different doctors. It looks like you've had rx's from four unrelated docs and although it's innocent enough, from the outside it looks like you've been doctor shopping and that's a felony!

Just a word to the wise...

Oops. My comment was meant for Crazy in the Head.  Not Laurel.  My cat slept on my keyboard and it will hardly type now and I was in a hurry.

I'm not a grandmother but I am old enough to be a great grandmother. I am almost 66. I recently quit 10/325...and I usually only took 4 a day, but sometimes 5, and I had been taking them for 5 years..gradually increasing the amount.  I could see they were getting to be a problem. I quit cold turkey.
It is certainly do-able.  I want to offer you support and tell you, you can do this. You may feel lousy for a few days but it is worth it and you can do this!

Hey, I'm about fifteen days clean off a very large Lortab (Hydrocodone aka HC) habit. Also well educated, affluent, and successful. Nothing to be ashamed of, and no way you can know better. Addiction is a disease, would you be ashamed if you caught mumps? Does mumps distinguish by class, race, religion, or right or left handedness? That's that argument. Second thing: I personally (this is my opinion for me, everyone is different) think tapering just drags out the withdrawl (WD) longer. Cold turkey (CT) is how I went, and my feeling was that it compressed the physical miserly into a shorter stretch, and the mental side (the important side) is about the same whether you taper or CT.  I think you need a three-pronged approach: 1) A set plan for when and how you will stop using. 2) A complete and realistic appraisal of the underlying factors that are causing you to use. 3) A specific action plan to deal with those underlying issues in place before you quit. If you have pain, anxiety, depression, etc., all these things can be exacerbated by WD. Putting a plan in place will help. If you seritonin's reuptate is currently being selectively inhibited, then the one thing you can focus on the the nutritional side of prepping for WD. Check out the recommended vitimins, energy drinks, and foods against your SSRI for contraindications, most should be OK (but not L-Tyrosine, avoid that). Hope this helps, best of luck to you miss!
