How long will it take for a seizure from alcohol withdrawl to occur?

Hi there,

my boyfriemd is an alcoholic. He is trying to get a handle on it and has been trying to slowly decrease his intake. Had a bit of a set back over the last few week so has kinda gotten back into it a bit heavily. My question is how long would it take i.e. days etc for a seizure from not drinking happen roughly. He has had a seizure from this in the past, but his drinking was much heavier back then. But also had a temazapam withdrawal situation a few months back where he had around four seizures in one day. So I am a little afraid his brain may be a little sensitive at the moment. He is currently on Epilim (which is a eplilepsy drug) not for epilipsy but to slow down his racing mind. I'm not sure if this medication will help with withdrawal seizures???? Anyway the reason I ask is that he is living far away at the moment and on his own. He was going to go cold turkey tonight and most of tomorrow as he has no money to by himself any alcohol to make sure his body doesn't react. After his episode with the temazapm he really doesn't want to go through the seizure thing again.
Also what is the best way to slowly reduce your alcohol amount without the fear of seizures? He would on a good day drink around 2 litres of wine and maybe 1500mls of beer and possibly a few cans of a spirit/soda mix. He may have less than this and on his bad days he will have much more. Do you try half it each week???

any advice would be appreciated

Bek

Good luck to you both..alcohol seizures are so dangerous, by the time my brother had seizures his brain had shrunk one inch and  ended up in a coma. and he was only 3 hours sober. be careful what you do. my prayers are with you..my brother passed three years later..

I would tell you boyfriend to go into an er and tell them and maybe they can get him into a detox program. His risk for seizures sound very high and it's sounds dangerous to go it alone.

No name is right the alcohol forum might help more.  As my past experience as medical personnel I use to see Alcoholics start d.t.s in about 72 hours.  Thats just a rough estimate.  If you see that he will need a lot of support and maybe need medical help.  We use to give Librium and start an I.V. for hydration and try to keep electrolytes balanced.  I don't know what they do now.
