How much Ibuprofen is ok?

Hey Community,

I wanted to ask about Ibuprofen. I know that's a baby drug and not addictive...although if you end up taking it constantly, who's to say, right?

I am day 7 off of norco + soma. I recently had 2 spinal fusion and feel a lot of residual nerve pain in the groin/glut area and some down the back of the leg. Been taking Ibuprofen (2 tablets of 200 mg) in the morning ...around late afternoon... if needed before I sleep. 6 tablet total for the day.

I used to take 3 tablets when I went for runs that were over 6 miles but that was all I took in one day... every 3 days or so, no problem. That seems like ages ago since with the back problems I had to stop running about 3 years ago.

I would like to take a little more as now that I am off everything, the pain is getting distracting and I don't want to be tempted to go back on the norco + soma.

Any thoughts on dosage and frequency? I am 106-115 lbs, 5" 5.5", female.

Would appreciate any advice. Thank so much everyone!

If you are on blood thinners, or even an .81mg Aspirin a day,  it's dangerous to use NSAIDs because of the chance of stomach bleeds that are hard to stop once they get going.

My neurologist said you can take up to 12 Advil within a 24 hour period safely but that is not for every day use.

Maybe look into Aleve. It's a NSAID too but you don't need as much.

I must have a tube down into my stomach every 12 weeks because of bleeding. I had no idea I was taking too much, but I wasn't going over the daily allowance. It was a chronic thing.

This was pre opiates too, and 4 years later, no stomach pill has fixed, and it hurts like ****!

My dr said it would be a life long watch now. So please be careful!

NSAIDS (the class of drug that Ibuprofen is in) can be really helpful but can also cause some serious problems if taken too long and too much. You can risk having GI bleeds and kidney problems if taken too long. I wouldnt recomend taking this drug daily for a long period of time and if you want to, I would DEFINITELY talk to your Dr.

With that said, Prescription strength ibuprofen is a 800mg pill. The  max recommended daily dose is 40 mg/kg (so for you about 1800 mg max a day)  Again, I wouldnt take this for extended period of time without your Dr knowing this and being on board.

Congrats on the clean time!
