Hydrocodone

I had a spinal fusion May 20 2010.  I was on morphine in the hospital. Then when I was released I was put on oxycodone, and then lowered down to hydrocodone. It is now June 27 2010 and I have been off the meds for 3 days. Keep in mind that I have been on hydrocodone for a little over a year until I had the surgery.  So 3 days without the meds..... I have diarrhea atleast 10 times a day. I can not sleep. For the first 2 nights, i actually didnt.  I am very depressed.  I feel like I wanna just start punching the walls or even myself, and I know that sounds crazy but I guess thats the wd talking.  My question is, it's been 3 days, so how much longer do I have.  Im sure my doctor would prescribe me more medicine, but I dont want to have to go through this ever again, so I would rather quit now then later.  Will it get better from here, or does it get worse, thanks, and please help me with any information you have. Prayers would be appreciated also.

Hi and welcome! Honestly that doesn't make any sense to me. Not that I think you should just be doping yourself up all the time, but if it is terminal and you are in pain then I don't understand why your doctor would do that. I would think quality of life would be most important, whether that means being on the meds or off. Try talking to him or her about it. Remember, the doctor is employed by you and should at least give your input some consideration.

Good luck hon and keep posting,

I was on hydrocodone for two years for a back injury, then I found out that I had cancer and they put me on morphine for the last 6 months. The doctor is trying to wean me off of the pain meds. But I think she is trying to wean me to fast. I have been very depressed and most days ,I do not have enough energy to get out of bed. I am being told that I most likely not to live another year. Is my doctor doing the right thing about trying to wean me off off the pain meds when I have so little time left?

I'm sure you're going to get a lot of answers on this.  Why didn't your doctor wean you down?  You shouldn't have to go through withdrawals, though at this point, you're probably half way through and probably at the worst point now; so maybe sticking it out is best.  I just think it's terrible when doctors don't let their patients know this is going to happen and work with them.

Hello and welcome.

Yup it is withdraw. Depending on how many you were taking I would say you have about 7 to 10 days of feeling pretty poor. Good News is 3 days into it is great. Think of it as having the flu. Drink lots of fluids, hot baths and showers, try to do some type of moving around.
It will get better.
