ADDICTION: SUBSTANCE ABUSE COMMUNITY
Im a

Im a

17 year old A and B student, and i started stealing my moms Loratabs about 6 months ago, I rarely take more than one a day, but still, i am trying hard to stop, but it seems like it is to no avail. I want to quit cold turkey, but im terrified, because i cant just not show up to school and be bed ridden, but i know that if i dont stop, then this will become a serious problem as an adult. I use to think that eventually something will come along and make me realize that i have to stop, and fate will take over, and yadda, yadda, yadda, but thats ignorance, and i have a lot more knowledge about my situation now. I dont know why i joined this site, i guess im just looking for support more than anything....or answers, something!

Welcome to the forum Jordon.  You coming here and acknowledging you problem is a huge step. You are on a very low dose and not for a long period of time. That is good. If you keep going it is going to get much worse for you. Get off of them now !  Your withdrawls should be easy.  My opinion, if you need to miss a day of school, it is worth it.  You need to deal with the underlying reason that you are taking these.  Is there anyway you can talk to your mom about this ?  It breaks my heart to hear such a young person with everything going for them, getting mixed up in this pill addiction.  I know personally what hell it is and you don't want to go there.  There should be more people answering your post soon that will know what kind of w/d , if any you can expect.   Stay with us.

I can totally relate to where you are coming from.  If you can, stop know or it will continue to get worse.   I know it would be hard but maybe come clean with your mom so the temptation is not in the house.  This problem rarely just goes away and it almost always gets worse!

Hopefully your withdrawls should not be to bad or to long.  IF YOU STOP NOW.  These pills are sneaky little buggers and it will just keep getting worse if you don't stop now. Soon those pills your Mom has will not be enough. Oh God, The thought of what could happen to you is so bad. Please, Please stop now. Keep talking to us, Jordon. We'll help you through this.

Jordan,

How about quitting over the long holiday weekend coming up?  Then you'll have four days to laze about the house, and hopefully won't miss any school.  Everyone gets "the flu" once in a while, right?

I agree that coming clean with your Mom would be a great thing.  It would really help to have support thru this, and to get those pills out of reach.  I also know that not all families are supportive or understanding, so I trust your judgment about whether or not to tell her.  But definitely find *some* form of support, somewhere.  This site is a great place to start.  I'm glad you came here.

Do you have counselors at your school?  Or is there a low cost counseling center in your area?  A therapist/counselor can be a great help.  And going to one doesn't mean you're crazy.  It means you're taking care of yourself.

Best of luck to you, Jordan.

As I think about this more. . .

You are taking one of your Mom's pills every day.  Occasionally more.  That's 30+ pills a month.  How much is your Mom taking, that she doesn't notice 30 pills going missing?

It sounds like Mom may be needing some help, too!

You sound so mature, you're doing the right thing by admitting that you have a problem.  I took one a day for quite a long time, and when I quit I had virtually no withdrawal symptoms.  It wasn't until I took 2 at a time, four times a day, that I had w/d when I stopped cold turkey after doing that for about a month.  You should be able to deal with it physically, but definitely see a school counselor or seek advice from an adult you can trust.
