Inravenous Drug Abuse

by Sandra, Sep 22, 2000 12:00AM
My sister has been using I\V drugs for the last few years .By the grace of God and by the efforts of our family members she has
gave up this habbit and is leading a normal life now.During the
course of her dependence she has destroyed almost all available
veins of her body. Now it is not possible to administer any blood or fluids - even blood cannot be withdrawn for laboratory purposes . We are all concerned about this . Is there any way to
restore the lost  veins or to develop new ones ?

My wife has had the same problem with collapsed veins due to repeated IV administration. She had to have a port installed in her chest with a catheter that runs directly to her heart. She gets weekly chemotherapy and blood tests. Hopefully your sister's veins will heal enough to not have to go this route. My wife had the port installed under local anesthetic in about two hours and the device has saved her countless hours of finding a good vein. Hope this advice was helpful.
