Is Ativan helpful in relieving opiate withdrawls ?

by maryhume, Jan 01, 2009 07:06AM
Hi, thank you for your help. I have cancer and take Percoset to ease pain but I am finding myself "addicted." I do not want to be addicted but the cancer pain trumps evrything right now, so alas I take the Percoset.
I also have Ativan and was wondering if Ativan cold ease the "withdrawl" suffering that comes with not taking enough Percoset ??
Many thanks for any sincere advice.
Kindly,
Mary Clark

Mary, Ativan is a benzo, just like Valium, Klonopin, and Xanax. Yes, it helps with some of the withdrawal symptoms such as RLS and especially the ramped up anxiety we see right away. Just be careful with it as well. Continued use might very well get you addicted to it as well. But, before all of that, take care of the pain you're experiencing now. Cancer pain is the main reason most of these drugs were even produced. If you find yourself taking more than directed, or running out early, then talk to your Doctor about alternatives. Until that time, use them if you need them. Cancer pain is nothing to mess with.
