Is Marijuana actually addicting??

by startotheright, May 01, 2009 10:36AM
My boyfriend is 17 and has been smoking marijuana for about five..maybe six years. He's tried other things, harder things, but my main concern is the amount of pot he does smoke. I once asked him if we were to have kids would he stop? And he replied with "I may have a major cut back, but I can never see me stopping" Is this because of an addiction? Or does he simply enjoy doing it? Sometimes it makes me very worried.
Any information on whether marijuana can have a hold on a person like tobacco or cocaine would be appreciated :]
Thanks

Marijuana is not physically adictive, there is no withdrawl from it, maybe hard to sleep for the first few days and a little loss of apetite. The problem with marijuana is that makes most people sluguish, not motivated. No it does not have a hold like tobacco or cocaine, these two are addictive on a physical level, the body needs and craves it. Marijun, maybe psychologically adictive, never in the same category as other things.

It's a psychological addiction, not really physical at all.

It will affect your ability to have kids as it does lower sperm count, however.

Otherwise... if he's doing it every day of the week, it's too much. He needs to learn how to relax and have fun without the mary jane.

One of the serious side effects of marijuana is it affects your ability to think in a logical, coherent fashion. Part of this is it affects your memory recall as well as how you perceive the world.

So if he has any desire to pursue anything in life that invloves serious thought and action, he should cut back seriously or stop.

my bf has been an everyday pot smoker  for umm like 10 years- smoking morning, noon and night. due to some law related incidents he has had to stop. This has been the first time since we have been a couple that he has not smoked pot and his mentality has changed completely. He is no longer 'groggy' or moody- he has the energy to get up and go- and has been more interested in sex than ever....
so although it seems like no big deal- i think that smoking on a daily basis is not good for you (sperm count def not good for)
he felt no physical withdrawal from quitting-aside from not being able to fall asleep for a few days.

thanks for that! as I guess you can see, I don't know much about pot. And my boyfriend is the same way, smokes everyday. My boyfriend isn't very moody or groggy, he's actually very active. so I guess it either takes time to become that way, or it simply varies in personality.

Every person is different. You can't say no one ever withdraws from pot, mchiurazzi. People who have other medical conditions can withdraw, because subconsciously, the marijuana use was connected to and supporting treatment of the other condition. I have witnessed this twice. The better example is a friend of mine who has PTSD, post traumatic stress disorder, and when she quit pot, it was like they took her off of her psych meds: she went berserk. Fits of crying and locking herself in her dorm room, constant sleeping, horrible rage and irritability, loss of appetite, nausea, rapid weight loss, etc. CERTAINLY, these things should be connected to her PTSD. But, were she to have continued smoking pot, she would not have felt those symptoms. She would have been like any person medicated for PTSD.

The point here is you can't just put a stamp on the drug and say, "This is what it does and doesn't do, I know because I used it for 8 years, all my friends did too, and anyone who tells you something other than what I told you is b.s.ing you." You probably don't know anyone with PTSD, or Alzheimer's, or a bazillion conditions, who use pot daily, so how would you know how they could react when they stop using it?

Anything in the world can be psychologically addicting, so it doesn't make it dangerous. People get addicted to video games, TV, running, weight lifting, food, etc. etc.

Pot is the least harmful of all the drugs Booze kills more people than any other drug and its legal. The problem with pot is it is not  consistent atall as far as what you get when you buy. There us pot that will just stay in your head and give you  a lot of visons and sounds, there is pot that will hit your body hard and make you sleeply, there is pot that is molding and will give you lings problems. Eact strain of pot is very differnt from another, also the time they harvest will and can make the pot act differently on your body and brain. So my point is you simply do not know what you getting each time unless you deal with a grower. If booze was illeal and pot was legal millions of lives would be saved each year.
Also there are manycase where only pot will relieve certain type of pain, it is also very good for tourettes and no there is no wds from pot but you could and probabaly will have cravings once you stop.

Peace

Marijuana is considered to be as an illegal substance.  Whether he enjoys a lot smoking marijuana, he is considered as addict or being too much dependent to that substance.  Recommend him to undergo a treatment program for that particular substance abuse.

It's not illegal because it's addicting, it's illegal because of propaganda and racism.
