Is Xanax an anti-d or anxiety med?

by jim811, Feb 20, 2008 05:44AM
Morning Everyone..

Is Xanax an anti-depressant or anxiety med?  Addictive?  How long can you take this without becoming dependent on the med?  Is this a good med for PAWS?

My head feels likes it cracken open after being 30 days clean...

Thanks,

Nick

That is great - 30 days clean!!!  Does your doctor know about your addiction?  If so, I am shocked that he would give you xanax - The fact that it is the #! prescribed anti-anxiety medication bothers me.  Xanax is such a 'downer', and so addictive...and causes horrifying withdrawals that can be very dangerous.  It has always been my opinion that dr.s are too quick to medicate with such strong drugs with total disregard for the patient.  Please think twice about taking xanax.
You are doing great staying clean!!!  That is awesome!! !  You need to be very proud of yourself -
Maybe check out the Thomas recipe...it works perfect for aftercare as well.  The vitamins, herbs, and minerals are all natural and can work wonders without having to worry about what you are ingesting in your body.
Lay a slice of cold lemon on your head...hey, it cannot hurt.
Best of luck!

valium is a lttile milder and not quite as abused as xanax..just gotta be careful not to exhange one addiction for the other.....xanax is a harder and more dangerous withdrawal than opiates...look ito herbal calming agents although I have used  valium/a benzo to detox as well

Xanax is very addictive. I did not know there would be any withdraw problems when I suddenly stopped taking it. I had a major seizure 4 days later.

xanax was my DOC prescribed to me for anxiety 3 years ago.. it is meant to be a short term med 4 weeks maximum but many, many doctors continue prescribing it well after the time it should have been stopped. It is highly addictive and after long term use it causes severe depression. After using it for more than the stated four weeks it also CAUSES anxiety.. it is a terrible med and withdrawing from it is hell and has to be medically supervised as it causes seizures... congrats on 30 days - don't ruin it with taking xanax especially if you are prone to addiction...

Although all of the above is true, it can be used appropriately and effectively.  I used it in the past for severe test-taking anxiety and hadn't used it for anything else.  When towards the end of the w/d **** I was cracking, I got some again.  I took it two times a day and for just a couple of days, I'm cool without it.  It's like anything else that's addictive, it all depends on who you are, why you're taking it, coping skills, all that stuff.

There are lots of alternatives and Valium is often prescribed in it's stead, but they are both benzodiazepines and addictive in nature.  Talk to the doc about this.  They could limit your quantity and request a visit in two days to see how you're doing.  It's just a thought.
