How much oxy for how long? What are your tentative plans? It is my opinion that you would be seriously in error if you get in methadone for ANY length of time over a mid-range oxy thing.......

Been on for about 2 yrs & about 2-4 oxy 40s a day. Do you think methadone is the key?

by cathy5841, Oct 21, 2008 07:34PM
yes it much worse that oxy detox.  read an article in sadinmichigans journal written by a dr who was addicted...i dont think methadone is ever the answer to get off narcotics...it does have its place but not for oxy w/ds.  it is a potent drug with a long half life...do your research....i will find the url for that journal and post it.

I think it would be like trying to use gas to put out a fire,. It can helpfull for people that have failed multiple times. In these cases it's called "harm reduction therapy" and could help as long as other drugs aren't abused with methadone.

To use Methadone to come off of Oxy is like using an atomic bomb when all you need is a hand grenade.   The addiction to Methadone is so much worse than Oxy.   To come off Oxycontin, the best way is to use Percocet (same drug- Oxycodone) or Hydrocodone (Vicodin) and taper until you can jump off.  Methadone will cause a much worse addiction and if you try to quit it you will suffer W/D's for months.  If he thinks there is a pain free way to get off the drugs everyone on this site would be singing its praises-- Look at all the people who posted and were on Meth ---- they do not sing its praises - rather curse the day they ever found it.  All the best.

METHADONE IS NOT THE ANSWER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT WILL DETROY YOUR BODY AND THE W/D ARE 1000X WORSE DONT DO IT PLEASE you will end up wasting years if not the rest of your life on that **** they market as a fix all for addicts.   going to the clinic for my oc addiction(was about the same/ higher in mg as you)was the biggest mistake of my life next to starting the oc's to begin with.. trust me its not the answer I will pm you my entire story in detail if you would like. PLEASE reconsider your options

this is the url to the article by the dr that took methadone...please read it before you take it.  good luck and please keep posting.

if u do decise to use it for detox...get off quick/2-3 weeks and use a small dose per day to avoid wds from it..people need to beware when using strong narcs like methadone or sub that they can be stepping into a situation that is worse than they were in...use caution..

11 days into my done w/d. things are getting better. it's so much harder to come off then anything. BUT if i didn't get on it. i would not have done the hard work i did at the clinic. thats where i decided to get clean. and changed my way of thinking.only after i didn't have to chase my high anymore could i sit and think about what i had become.so yes it's harder to come off but some of can only do thing's the hard way. i had good counsler. met other people that were trying to stay clean and cleaned out my closets.i was ready to get clean when i did it. just wanting it is not going to get it for you like anything in life you have to work hard at it.im able to control my thinking now even while detoxing. this is the first time in my life i have been clean of everything .from 14 till 40 i used something drink , smoke , pills H, coke , metadone and the list go's on. you have to stop all of it. but most of all you must chang the way you live and think. find a hp and pray. good luck and god bless

I have endured withdrawals from both methadone and oxys, speaking from my own personal experience I must say that the withdrawals from oxys were more severe, they were just horrible, but the methadone while not as intense was much more lengthy, I used methadone for 6 years at a high dose and tapered down to a low dose then jumped off, I never tapered from the oxys I merely went cold turkey off of them, this may explain why the oxy withdrawals were worse? I also wish to say to dioriod, that you have done a outstanding job at getting off methadone and really working with the clinic and the drug of methadone to ensure success!!  This was also the path that I took while trying to get off oxys, and so far 7 plus months later I to have had success. Hi I have to agree with worried about the methadone. I sucessfully used methadone to get off vicks, But I was at a VERY low dose and still had some w/d symptoms. If ur dr is wanting long term methadone use then run as fast as you can out of there!! Good luck to you

Methadone can help an addict who has failed many times to stabalize their lifes if they don't use other drugs or drink. Most addicts who go on methadone don't do the right thing and start hanging out with clinic people and may further a criminal education. Also the clinics of today gives you as much as you want on dosage. The sky's the limit and you can get loaded and sit there and nod all day as I and others did. I've know it to help someone start a new life but much less these days the way the clinics are. all the best

by sadinmichigan, Oct 23, 2008 03:45AM
please don't go on methadone. I have detoxed from many things including oxy's and yes it is bad, but i will tell you there is nothing in my oinion worse than methadone withdrawal..absolute hellish experience..I have been of that now over 2 yrs..thank God. I really hope you took the time to read my journal...

I was on methadone for a month Ive been off for months now. I was on a very low dose and tapered every week for a month. I know alot of people have been experiences with methadone including my good friend Sad. I just give my experience to people and I think if its prescribed by a dr who honestly wants to help you it can be a helpful tool. Staying on long term is VERY bad!!

by mr.lucky66, Oct 23, 2008 02:24PM
Sunny is right. Those who really take it the way you are supposed to and not extreme doses and no other drugs, can succeed . I've seen several who have used methadone as a stepping stone to a drug free life but these cases are rare these days

by sadinmichigan, Oct 23, 2008 03:13PM
I also agree with Sunny and Mr.Lucky, but as Mr.Lucky said..it is too easy to get completely taken by it and when you experience your first minor withdrawal from it when tapering (provided the dose and length) you will most likely stay on it for fear..like I and many others did. I was on my highest does in a "clinic" 72mg..I ended up waiting over a year before I took the crazy jump off 65mg cold turkey. I have given birth to 6 kids natural and I would have rather have done that 6 times a day instead of what Iwent through, however, I did live and make it through but not with much pain and suffering. Good luck to you..

My highest dose of methadone was 15 mg a day. I still had the w/ds from the vicoden but it just took the edge off. I really didnt like the methadone at the 15 mg dose when I went down to 10mg it wasnt as bad. I just dont understand the logic of these drs - why was ur dose so high. I really dont know much about methadone and I really try not to tell my experience with it because Ive heard sooo many bad things I would hate for someone to hear my story and get into a worse situation than they are already. I was sooo lucky to have found the best dr ever. My primary care dr wanted me to go onto suboxone and Im sooo glad it didnt happen that way.

by mr.lucky66, Oct 23, 2008 06:20PM
I think maybe some of these many numerous long term sub patients may be better off on low dose methadone.

by sadinmichigan, Oct 23, 2008 09:28PM
honestly Sunnyd..i was at a clinic and i don't think they cared how high of a dose I got to. I was at way higher of a dose than I needed to be at fora 10 pill a day addicition.I was simply a customer. I learned the hardest way one could learn. Anyone I can deter from methadone willhave made it all worth what I suffered. I still after 2 yrs don't feel the same I used to..it's sad..bad drug..

by Sunnyd210, Oct 24, 2008 09:33AM
Lucky I think any of these drugs long term are not the answer. Its a business and they are making money off of others misery. I know there are some people who benefit from long term sub or methadone use but for most of us thats not the answer. These drs are giving drugs that can help people such a bad rap because they arent prescribing them the right way they just want the money. I was one of the lucky ones who had a pain dr that truly wanted to help me he prescribed the methadone for me which he really wasnt supposed to it was written like it was for pain most dr wont do that so u get stuck in a clinic and in worse shape then you were before.
